About the Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF)

The Women’s Sports Foundation exists to enable girls and women to reach their potential in sport and life. We are an ally, an advocate, and a catalyst. Founded by Billie Jean King in 1974, we are one of the first organizations to recognize the powerful connection between sports access, equity, and society. WSF has been changing the game for 50 years through its research, advocacy, and community programming, investing over $100 million to help girls and women play, compete, and lead – in sports and beyond – without barriers. A leader and champion of the entire women’s sports ecosystem, WSF amplifies the vital societal and cultural impact that is made when girls and women play sports. All girls. All women. All sports® To learn more about the Women’s Sports Foundation, please visit www.WomensSportsFoundation.org.

2024: WSF’s 50th Anniversary

Fifty years ago – shortly following the enactment of Title IX – the Women’s Sports Foundation® (WSF®) was founded by sports icon and social justice pioneer Billie Jean King as arguably one of the first organizations to recognize the role of sports in helping girls and women achieve their full potential, both personally and professionally. What was started by Billie Jean King in 1974 with a $5,000 check after winning an award for the best female athlete of the year, has grown into a multifaceted organization that has invested over $100 million to help girls and women play, compete, and lead - in sports and beyond - without barriers. Five decades later, the Women’s Sports Foundation has become a leading authority on sports access, equity, and societal impact. Through advocacy and WSF-driven research and data, WSF emphasizes the broader benefits of equality in sports, shaping a more inclusive world for girls, women, and society at large.
