The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Association is the only national not-for-profit voluntary health organization dedicated solely to the fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (often called Lou Gehrig's disease). The mission of The ALS Association is to lead the fight to cure and treat ALS through global, cutting-edge research, and to empower people with Lou Gehrig’s disease and their families to live fuller lives by providing them with compassionate care and support.

As part of The ALS Association Greater New York Chapter, the Assistive Technology and Equipment Loan Program Intern will work in collaboration with the Chapter's Assistive Technology Specialist to learn about this exciting field. He/she will play an important role in the day to day operations required to maintain and enhance this vital program that serves people with ALS throughout the Greater New York area.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF INTERN:

  • Maintain contact with individuals with ALS and family members to determine if items received are working out.
  • Confirm delivery and return of items with individuals, family members, and loan closet personnel.
  • Follow-up with individuals and families to determine current or future equipment needs.
  • Provide information regarding assistive technology and durable medical equipment.
  • Respond to and track offers of equipment donations.
  • Box and ship items from office.
  • Receive, unpack, tag, and shelve items in office.
  • Update and maintain equipment data within database.
  • Other related duties as agreed upon between intern and supervisor

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:   

  • Currently seeking college degree with at least one-year completed; major in related discipline preferred.
  • Ability to work between 10/15 hours per week.
  • Comfortable working with and responding to people.
  • Comfortable working with and responding to people with physical and speech limitations.
  • Keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and well with others.
  • Strong communication and writing skills
  • Organized, detail-oriented and hardworking

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ALS ASSOCIATION:

  • Provide a background for understanding ALS and the Chapter's programs and services for patients and their families.
  • Provide guidance and instruction for day-to-day operations and program tasks.
  • Serve as a resource to Intern for questions, concerns, and perspective.
  • Provide adequate supervision throughout Internship term.
  •  Work with college/university to award credit for internship, if desired by candidate
