Description

Our Mission

GLSEN strives to ensure that each member of every school community is valued and respected regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression. We believe that such an atmosphere engenders a positive sense of self, which is the basis of educational achievement and personal growth. Since homophobia, transphobia and heterosexism (among other forms of identity-based discrimination) undermine a healthy school climate, we work to educate teachers, students and the public at large about the damaging effects these forces have on youth and adults alike and how to promote inclusivity to prevent and counteract them.

About the Ed Piece Internship

The Ed Pierce Internship was established to honor the memory of GLSEN Board Member Ed Pierce, and to ensure his legacy and commitment to LGBT youth lives on. Ed’s years of service and generous contributions to GLSEN will be remembered through the professional development and training of young people who, with the skills they gain from GLSEN’s internship program, will carry forward his commitment to helping LGBTQ youth thrive through education.

Apply if you are:

  • Interested in gaining experience in nonprofit management, community organizing, and social justice work.
  • Passionate about safe and inclusive schools for all students.
  • Knowledgeable about (or eager to learn about) and drive change on the issues LGBT students face in school.

Objectives:

Assist the Northeast Regional Director (NRD) and the Field Services Department in supporting local GLSEN Chapters in the Northeast Region of the United States.

The Intern will work closely with the NRD and support Chapters’ programmatic, advocacy, and communication strategies and efforts. The Intern and NRD will meet regularly to define specific project goals and review progress.
