The Solar Electric Light Fund (www.SELF.org) is a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit whose mission is to design and implement solar energy solutions to assist the 1.2 billion people living in energy poverty with their economic, educational, health care and agricultural development.
Since 1990, SELF has completed projects in more than 20 countries and pioneered unique applications of solar power for drip irrigation in Benin, vaccine refrigeration in Haiti, telemedicine in the Amazon rainforest, online learning in South Africa, microenterprise development in Nigeria, and community development in Colombia.
We are currently seeking undergraduate summer interns to assist the team with:
- Research on the relationship between solar electricity and energy, health, gender issues, food security, and climate change.
- Creating content for social media campaigns
- Prospect research
- Special projects
The ideal candidates will have a demonstrated interest in renewable energy and international development. Candidates should be strong writers, creative, have an eye for detail, and able to work independently.
This is an unpaid position, and we do not provide housing. Check with your school about receiving academic credit.

Social Media Writing Sample Prompt
SELF interns have the opportunity to assist with the operation of the organization’s various social media accounts. Please submit the following with your application:
1) Draft 2 tweets and one Facebook post to commemorate Earth Day in the context of SELF’s mission.
2) Draft 3 tweets and two Facebook posts that inform followers about the SELF project that interests you the most (information on current and previous projects can be found in the “Projects” section of our website).
