Goals and objectives of the internship:

• Each quarter, CANY’s data science staff, interns, and volunteers work on a number of prison oversight projects that involve data collection, data analysis, and reporting.
• Projects are staffed between staff, interns, and volunteers appropriately according to interest, experience, and availability.
• A number of projects for 2021 will include creating interactive visualizations for our website, including:

Ø Creating a Data Multi-display map and timeline of Covid infections throughout NY State Prisons with brushing and filtering. 

Ø Creating information displays for computed values that make both prison data and Covid data more understandable and consistent

Ø Upgrading CANY’s Postgres, JavaScript and React infrastructure to make it more pleasant to use, faster and more secure. This is the infrastructure that powers some of our research, intake database and internal data dashboard.

In this role, interns will work with CANY’s data science and research staff on a number of data-science projects to gain a well-rounded, balanced understanding of our prison monitoring work.

Final product(s)/deliverable:

·        Interactive Maps and Charts

·        Enhancements for our dashboard for prison issues;

·        Upgrading CANY’s Postgres, JavaScript and React infrastructure to make it more pleasant to use, faster and more secure. We want to design an input screen that pulls up everything we know about someone and allows an intake associate or intern to fill in the new information with maximum ease and flexibility.

In this role, students and volunteers will work with CANY’s data science and research staff on a number of data-science projects to gain a well-rounded, balanced understanding of our prison monitoring work.

Skills and other requirements:

·        Experience with D3, React, JavaScript highly sought;

·        Data analysis and research skills (R and Python preferred);

Compensation and hours:

·        $ 1,000 for the semester (15 weeks)

·        15 hours per week structured around other student obligations such as classes
