Map Kibera Trust is an organization based in Nairobi, Kenya, that uses mapping, open data, and digital storytelling for greater influence and representation for marginalized communities. Our team develops programs particularly in Nairobi’s slums, using OpenStreetMap and other open tools to support democracy, development, and humanitarian goals.  

Map Kibera Trust is seeking a website management and communications intern to work either in Nairobi, or remotely with our team which is based in the U.S. and Kenya. This is a great opportunity to gain practical experience in an international grassroots nonprofit setting. The intern will help to build Map Kibera’s digital presence, grow our online audience, improve our web presence, and provide a wide range of support to the Director and Coordinator. The ideal candidate is a strong writer and communicator who is creative, organized, and able to work independently. This is a part-time, unpaid internship. Responsibilities will include:

Help create a comprehensive communications strategy

Social media strategy development and implementation

Support online platform strategy development (updating, organizing and utilizing our online properties)

Update Map Kibera's website content

Research, write, and post regular content for Map Kibera’s websites and social media channels including blog posts, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and Facebook

Stay abreast of the latest trends in nonprofit online fundraising and social media techniques

Utilize Google Analytics tools to review key metrics and inform online strategy

Provide support for grant writing as needed

Assist with additional projects as assigned by the Director


Desired qualifications:

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Web design skills (Basic HTML, etc) a plus

Proven ability to organize time, work independently and manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively and efficiently

Demonstrated understanding of current digital and social media best practices and trends, including knowledge of channel optimization for maximum reach and visibility

Experience creating content for blogs, websites, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter

Background or strong demonstrated interest in our field of work: global development, geography, mapping, citizen media, open data, accountability and transparency, etc. 

Experience with WordPress

A background in graphic design and Adobe Creative Suite is helpful
