The Maria Mitchell Association, a science and history-based nonprofit organization on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, now offers three paid internship positions in environmental education working for our award winning Summer Discovery and Naturalist Leadership Programs. All internships include opportunities for (1) immersive learning and teaching in diverse habitats around Nantucket and in our Natural Science Museum, (2) developing animal care and handling skills, and (3) leading science-based activities for local and visiting families.

Environmental Education Instructor Internship: Become skilled in writing and implementing science, environmental education, and outdoor adventure based lesson plans for campers aged 3.5-16 years with a different co-teacher each week. This outdoor teaching opportunity takes place in diverse marine and upland ecosystems around Nantucket. Each intern will also have the opportunity to spend at least one week developing animal care and exhibit interpretation skills.

Assistant Education Coordinator Internship: Designed for individuals with previous camp and lifeguard experience who wish take on more leadership roles, gain experience in the administration of camp programs and lesson planning for family programs, and have a passion for science education for all ages. This person will supervise aquatic activities, help instructors with campers in the field, plan and lead pop-up science activities around Nantucket, and help the Education Coordinator in the camp office.  You must have at least two years of lifeguarding and driving experience.

Naturalist Leadership and Animal Programs Internship: This internship is ideal for those who have an aptitude for science education, have experience working with animals, and enjoy teaching middle and high school students. This intern will spend mornings in our Natural Science Museum teaching campers and volunteers about our animals and how we take care of them, leading public feeding programs, and maintaining animal tanks. Afternoons will be spent leading the Naturalist Leadership Program for teens aged 13-16 with the help of another instructor. Using the island of Nantucket as an outdoor classroom, this intern will write and implement weekly lesson plans which train campers in animal care and naturalist skills so they are able to volunteer in our museum and aquarium.
