Description

The Hunger Response Team of Sterling (HRTS) is a nonprofit that was launched in 2020 with the mission to provide volunteer-driven support addressing hunger, food insecurity and related social services, primarily to communities in Sterling, Leesburg and Herndon in the Loudoun and Fairfax Counties of Virginia. The HRTS team, which is 100% volunteer-based, aims to identify and to help mitigate the challenges faced by the underserved in our local community through the following: raising awareness; sourcing, gathering, and distributing food and basic necessities; assisting families and individuals with meeting their basic needs; and providing educational aid and resources to individuals in need.

Our goals for the current year are:

  • To focus on our Backpack Buddies program, where need has increased by 20% at the six Sterling schools with which we partner.
  • To develop sustainable funding, marketing, and fundraising strategies to ensure we are able to continue providing support to our partners at equal or increased levels in future years.
  • To widen our network of supporters, the majority of which have historically been associated with the faith community.

To help achieve our goals this year, we are hiring a Summer Marketing & Communications intern. The intern will report to the HRTS Board Co-Chairs.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop both digital and print marketing and fundraising materials (such as fliers, social media posts, annual report, posters, email newsletters, videos)
  • Support the Marketing & Communications Lead in developing a plan for marketing and communications
  • Support the Fundraising Subcommittee Lead in developing a strategic fundraising plan for HRTS
  • Reach out to individual members of the HRTS Planning Committee to learn from them about their individual responsibilities and to identify other areas where support is needed, as time allows
  • Attendance at a packing event (Tuesdays at noon in Sterling) is encouraged

Necessary Qualifications:

  • Current undergrad or grad student in a relevant program
  • Self-starter who can work independently, create high-quality deliverables, and meet deadlines
  • Interest in battling hunger in Northern Virginia and/or in helping school-aged populations
  • Willingness to interact and learn from a diverse group of board members
  • Interest in identifying and proposing additional projects that would bring value to HRTS

Ideal Qualifications:

  • Experience with Canva or other design software
  • Experience with social media management, fundraising, and marketing
