Position: Internships & Career Success Graduate Intern

Reports to: Senior Program Coordinator of Internships & Career Success

Status: Part-Time

Start Date: ASAP

The Opportunity

The Internships & Career Success Graduate Intern will play an integral role in maintaining databases of outreach, progress, and application completion while directly working with high school and college students to ensure access to and placement in meaningful academic-year and summer opportunities relevant to their interests and career goals.

In close collaboration with the Internships and Career Success team, the Internships & Career Success Graduate Intern will manage communication with OppNet’s college and high school students (OppNet Fellows) through supporting Fellows with applications to academic-year internship opportunities, collaborating with Fellows to strengthen their resumes, and providing constructive feedback on their essays for summer programs. Communication to connect Fellows with career success and readiness opportunities will be done through email and Zoom calls, as the OppNet Fellows program will be running remotely this year. If our public health situation significantly improves, then in-person programming will resume, and NYC-based support at events will be expected for the Graduate Intern. Whether remote or in-person, this is an exciting opportunity for a graduate student interested in being part of an innovative college and career success program serving public high school students in New York City.

The Organization

Since 2003, The Opportunity Network has ignited the drive, curiosity, and agency of students from historically and systematically underrepresented communities to connect them to college access and success, internships, career opportunities, and personal and professional networks. Our two core programs, OppNet Fellows and Career Fluency ® Partnerships, are anchored in our proprietary Career Fluency ® curriculum, which articulates the necessary skills and mindsets for college and career readiness. All of the work OppNet leads is in service of realizing our vision of a nation connected through vibrant communities and networks actively in pursuit of social justice and educational equity – a nation where all young people can freely create their own path to enduring success that honors their passions, ambitions, and full identities.

The Person

The ideal candidate will personally connect to the important work we do and value diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) across the organization. The candidate will demonstrate DEI values by actively participating in organizational-wide learning sessions and self-reflection as well as working with others to enact changes that contribute to meeting the organization’s DEI goals.

The Graduate Program Intern’s primary responsibilities will be to:

  • Assist high school and college Fellows with internship applications, including reviewing application essays and ensuring Fellows meet application deadlines;
  • Review high school and college Fellows’ resumes (primarily in Google Docs), including providing comments and suggested edits, responding to Fellows’ questions, following up with Fellows who have not shared their resumes, managing Fellows’ resume database, and updating resources to strengthen the OppNet resume review process;
  • Research high school and college internship and enrichment partners relevant to Fellows’ interests and create and/or update databases with program and contact information on established, new, and prospective partners;
  • Create and design Career Success resources for Fellows, including but not limited to infographics, one-pagers, and/or program-wide text message campaigns;
  • Provide virtual (and potentially in-person) logistics and facilitation support for Career Success events, including but not limited to resume workshops, mock interviews, speed networking, and summer opportunity family nights;
  • Assist with organization of special events as needed, e.g. summer institute, college application boot camp, and college transition boot camp, career fluency panels; and
  • Assist OppNet staff members with all other duties related to effective program implementation, including: copying, scanning, and other administrative tasks.

The ideal candidate will have these key assets and attributes:

  • Strong time management and organizational skills;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Strong data management skills;
  • Strong research skills and ability to synthesize findings;
  • Ability to take initiative;
  • Previous experience working with high school and college students is a plus;
