INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW:

This Development Intern position is an unpaid internship. The intern will work with the Development department to gain real-world experience fundraising for a major symphony orchestra. This task-oriented, part-time, unpaid internship is 12-20 hours per week with flexibility for class schedules. Schedule must allow for minimum four-hour shifts, with full days preferred.

 

BEGINNING AND END DATES OF INTERNSHIP PERIOD:

Minimum commitment of twelve weeks taking place between January and June. The timeframe can be slightly flexible.

Director of Individual Giving

Senior Manager of Individual Giving

 

DEGREE AND ACCESSIBILITY OF SUPERVISION:

Work independently and with team. Meet to assign projects daily; supervisor welcomes questions.

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

At the end of this period (above) the intern will have learned:

·        Characteristics of a nonprofit organization and the role of fundraising in an art’s nonprofit arts organization.

·        Introductory understanding of fundraising as a career as well as the basics of fundraising communications, prospect research, development operations, and special events.

·        Knowledge of the everyday workings of a nonprofit including an understanding of a professional office environment.

·        Additional learning objectives can be accommodated to suit a candidate’s interests and educational goals.

 

PRIMARY WORK EXPECTATIONS:

·        Assist in drafting communications for solicitation and stewardship including letters, impact reports, and emails to achieve the fundraising goals of the Seattle Symphony.

·        Learn prospect research practices and tools using subscription and public sources to support colleague’s identification and qualification activities.

·        Analyze fundraising results and assist in developing tools to understand and improve efficacy of solicitation, stewardship, and operations.

·        Support fundraising event planning and execution, including invitation drafting, RSVP management, Check-In support, and other duties as assigned.

·        Work with careful attention to detail and a passion for customer service to ensure excellent relations with the donor family.

·        Provide additional departmental support as needed.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

·        In pursuit of a degree in arts administration, nonprofit management, fundraising or related field

·        Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook

·        Excellent communication, written, verbal and interpersonal skills

·        Ability to work on own initiative and meet deadlines

·        Attention to detail
