SOCIAL MEDIA AND ELECTIONS INTERNSHIP

Citizens Union Foundation is a nonpartisan good government advocacy group dedicated to making democracy work for all New Yorkers. Citizens Union serves as a civic watchdog, combating corruption and fighting for political reform.

About the role

We are looking for fall interns with an interest in social media and New York City politics to join our ElectNYC project. ElectNYC is a project including a website, social media and traditional marketing campaign, debates and community partnerships educating New Yorkers on the 2021 NYC elections. ElectNYC offers trustworthy guidance about who the candidates are, what elected officials do that can impact the lives of New Yorkers, and how voters can cast their vote and decide the fate of New York City in the 2021 election which will shape the city for generations to come.

The following are some of the responsibilities of ElectNYC interns:

· Research and create candidate and race specific social media posts;

· Post to social media and interact with the public;

· Create graphic designs for social media; and

· Research candidates and neighborhoods to identify key issues and players for posts.

The ideal intern will be a college graduate, postgraduate, or undergraduate who:

· Excels at social media, particularly Facebook, Twitter and Instagram;

· Understands NYC elections and wants to help voters access information;

· Friendly, helpful, responsive, communicative (interacting with public via social media);

· Knows or has the capacity and interest to learn simple graphic design using as canva or indesign;

· Has a background or interest in New York City politics and government;

· Excellent written communication skills; and

· The availability to commit a minimum of 15 hours per week (minimum 6 hours/day with some flexibility).

If you have some, but not all, of these qualifications and feel you would make a positive contribution to the team, we encourage you to apply. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the internship will take place entirely remotely for the foreseeable future. We do not offer paid internships but do provide a modest daily meal reimbursement of $15/day and we are also happy to work with your academic institution if you are interested in receiving credit.

Citizens Union Foundation is an Equal Opportunity Employer and encourages applicants of all backgrounds and experiences to apply. Our work will be focusing extra energy on underserved districts and those hit hardest by Covid-19 and voter suppression; candidates with familiarity with these communities and neighborhoods are strongly encouraged to apply.

Dates: September 15, 2021 – November 30, 2021. Flexibility with the start and end dates to accommodate for your Fall semester or other plans.

To apply: Please submit a cover letter and résumé via email to bweinberg@citizensunion.org, addressed to Ben Weinberg, Director of Public Policy, with the subject line: “Fall 2021 social media internship – [full name].” Your cover letter should include what specific skills you bring with you, when you hope to start, and how much time you can spend with us. Applications are considered on a rolling basis until all positions are filled and will start at the beginning of the Fall semester.
