About the Pike Place Secret Garden: The Pike Place Secret Garden is a community-led giving garden that grows a bounty of produce for the Pike Market Food Bank. A program of The Market Commons, the Garden increases access to culturally relevant foods for Food Bank shoppers and offers intergenerational programming and volunteer opportunities for our neighbors in Pike Place Market. The Garden roots the Market community through a shared passion for collaboration, gardening, and equitable food access.

Due to COVID-19 the Garden has been temporarily closed to the public and our volunteer and in-person community engagement programming is on hold until it is safe to welcome groups back into the garden. However, staff and summer interns have continued to maintain the garden and grow vegetables for the Food Bank.

About the Position: The garden intern will be responsible for executing the Garden’s annual planting plan and coordinating weekly deliveries of fresh produce to Pike Market Food Bank. This seasonal position offers meaningful experience in gardening, food access, and partnership development. Responsibilities:

• Execute garden work plan including planting and harvesting
• Assess the garden’s daily needs, such as watering, weeding, disease/pest mitigation, and general garden upkeep 
• Maintain a detailed record or plantings from seed to harvest
• Coordinate weekly produce deliveries with Pike Market Food Bank
• Evaluate garden work plan and make recommendations for future planting and garden operations
• Coordinate remote garden activities to engage the Market’s Child Care and Preschool
• If safe to do so, facilitate intergenerational community programs for child care students and seniors
• Opportunity to assist in the cultivation of content for the garden’s social media

Preferred Skills:

• Hands-on gardening experience: planting, harvesting, watering, weeding, etc.
• Exemplary interpersonal and communication skills
• Experience working with diverse communities of all backgrounds and ages
• Willingness to work majority of hours outside in the sun and varying weather conditions
• Passion for local food systems and community gardening
