Reports to:                       Social Harvest Project Lead

Job Type:                           Three months short term contract, part-time (30 hours/week)

Training period:              February 26 – March 16 (90 hours)

Start date:                         March 18th , 2021

End date:                          May 27th , 2021

As a participant of the Rideau-Rockcliffe Community Resource Center (RRCRC) Professional Internship Program, you will gain an enriching experience with one of our programs. By the end of your internship you can expect to have a recognized professional experience and network.

 

Social Harvest Ottawa is one of the Rideau-Rockcliffe Community Resource Centre's (RRCRC) social enterprises. Under the supervision of the Social Harvest Project Officer, the Greenhouse Operations intern will assist with the day-to-day operations of the greenhouse and manage the production of crops. In this position, the intern will gain skills in horticulture, supply chain administration, and project management.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

A.      Crop Production and Greenhouse Operations

·        Plant, care, and harvest crops

·        Package and label product

·        Conduct experiments on new crops

·        Report signs of insects or disease damage

·        Manage pest control and vermicomposting system

·        Sterilize equipment, clean work area, and maintain the space in good repair

 

B.      Administrative Support

·        Complete forms and records to document activities

·        Manage the inventory of supplies and product

·        Monitor greenhouse climate

·        Research best practices for variety of crop varieties

 

C.     Other duties

·        Work closely with colleagues

·        Reports regularly to supervisor

·        Participate in team meetings

·        Order and pick-up of supplies

·        Other tasks as assigned by the supervisor

 ·        High School diploma and/or Post-secondary education in a field related to plant biology, agriculture, or horticulture

·        Strong interest and basic experience in horticulture, agriculture, or gardening

·        Knowledge of local food systems and principles of food security

·        Valid Driver’s license; access to a personal vehicle an asset

·        Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends

·        Ability to perform repetitive tasks, stand for extended period of time, and lift 50 lbs.

·        Basic computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office Suite

·        Fluency in French or English is an asset
