Summer legal interns will be expected to work full-time, 40 hours per week, for 8-10 weeks. Some evenings and weekends may be required.

ABOUT US 

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, Ohio Chapter (CAIR-Ohio) advocates for the rights of Ohio’s growing Muslim community through legal advocacy, policy, and community development. CAIR-Ohio has a robust federal litigation practice. Our legal team provides high quality, no-cost legal representation to Muslims facing discrimination, including employment, public accommodation, and state action claims. CAIR-Ohio also provides legal guidance for community institutions and works alongside organizational partners for policy changes and justice.

RESPONSIBILITIES

We are looking for a rising 3L or 4L law student to fill an exciting summer internship position. 

  • Legal research and writing. CAIR-Ohio represents clients in federal court and in a variety of administrative proceedings. Interns will be asked to conduct research and draft complaints, motions, and other legal documents.
  • Conduct client intakes, follow-ups, and referrals. Interns will have the opportunity to regularly engage with clients and develop client relationships.
  • Engage with community and coalition partners. Interns will be encouraged to join staff members in coalition and community advocacy work.
  • Provide assistance on litigation, advocacy, and other projects as needed. CAIR-Ohio is a dynamic workplace and interns will be encouraged to explore opportunities across the organization.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Rising 3L or 4L.
  • Committed to CAIR-Ohio’s vision and organizational values. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to public interest, civil rights, and/or the Muslim community. 
  • Client-centered communicator. Effective and compassionate communication skills are necessary. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to providing client-centered and culturally competent advocacy for marginalized communities.
  • Strong research and writing skills. The ideal candidate will be well-versed in legal research tools, particularly Lexis, and demonstrate strong legal writing abilities.
  • Motivated self-starter and collaborator. The ideal candidate will work well in a dynamic environment, demonstrate self-initiative, as well as work collaboratively with project partners.
  • Strong organizational skills and an attention to detail. The ideal candidate will demonstrate an exceptional ability to manage multiple clients and projects simultaneously.
  • Prior experience or classwork in federal courts, administrative law, constitutional law, and/or anti-discrimination law, is preferred but not required.
