Part Time, 12-15 hours/week for 6 months, Specific Term through July 2020

Summary of Principal Responsibilities:

           

The Organizing and Advocacy Intern will support two policy initiatives: Newark Language Access and Immigrant Trust Directive Compliance project. Under the supervision of the Organizing and Advocacy Director, the intern will conduct or continue outreach to the Newark City Council, Mayor’s office, and supportive partners to improve language access for immigrants in Newark. The Organizing and Advocacy Intern will also record potential violations of the Immigrant Trust Directive identified by AFSC staff or partners and follow up on missing information.

Essential Functions/Specific Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct outreach to Newark City Council, Newark Mayor’s office and Language Access Project partners such as St. Stephan’s Church and Newark Municipal ID office.
  2. Assist or participate in presentations on Language Access Project in the community or at the City Council.
  3. Schedule meetings with community partners, community members or local officials.
  4. Record Trust Directive violation stories and identify any missing information.
  5. Create a summary or report on the Directive Violations.
  6. Assist or participate in meetings with allies and the Attorney General’s office.
  7. Meet regularly with supervisor

Qualifications:

  1. Personal experience with immigration systems a plus.
  2. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in multicultural contexts.
  3. Good oral and written communication skills. 
  4. Ability to communicate effectively and build mutually respectful relationships with co-workers, clients, and the public.
  5. Ability to work effectively and comfortably with Quaker principles.
  6. Self-motivated, detail oriented, well-organized, able to prioritize assignments and workload. 
  7. Driver’s license and access to a car preferred but not required.
  8. Fluency in a foreign language (Spanish preferred) in addition to English is a plus.

Compensation: $15.00 per hour - Non-Exempt – There are no medical, dental, or life insurance benefits, short-term or long-term insurance benefits with this position. AFSC does participate in unemployment, worker’s compensation, and social security.
