Communications Internship

Protect Our Activists, Juliana Barnet

Protect Our Activists is an affiliated project of the Institute for Policy Studies that is independently founded and operated by IPS Associate Fellow, Juliana Barnet. Associate fellows are non-staff members who research, write, design, or teach around a specific social justice issue in collaboration with IPS staff. They do not receive IPS funding or share office space with IPS.

Protect Our Activists is seeking enthusiastic, creative intern to help launch and promote website, books and events for Protect Our Activists, a new initiative focused on fostering a climate of safety, understanding and interconnection for social justice activists and activism, and on raising consciousness about activist culture in real life and in literature.

Intern will work closely with project director Juliana Barnet, activist-anthropologist-writer-artist, Associate Fellow of the Institute for Policy Studies, in promoting articles, talks, workshops and participatory research discussions in social justice media outlets and organizations. Candidate will have studies and work experience in communications, public relations, outreach, or similar field, as well as social justice activism experience and inclination.

Responsibilities

  • Implement launch of the project’s website;
  • Implement launch of Juliana Barnet’s upcoming “social justice mystery” novel Rainwood House Sings
  • Promote the website’s regular blog posts (POA Journal) and other writing, as well as events and presentations pertaining to the project, including guest blogs, interviews, articles, book talks, webinars, etc.;
  • Help draft media kit and other informational materials;
  • Support/assist with website by critiquing/editing content, art, design, technical aspects, depending on intern’s experience in these areas;

Must have a strong sense of social justice and of the primacy of popular movements in social transformation, AND an inquiring mind, innovative attitude, flexibility, and ability to look at both the small and the big pictures.

Other desirable qualities:

  • Familiarity with progressive media outlets, websites, organizations, movements, community, in the Washington, DC metro area and more broadly;
  • Experience researching, reaching out to, and pitching to prospective media outlets;
  • Fundraising experience;
  • Writing ability and experience, and a concise editorial eye;
  • Experience with at least some of the following: Scrivener, Photoshop, InDesign, MailChimp, Wordpress, Elementor;
  • List-building experience;
  • Knack for distilling concepts into accessible language and asking strategic questions;
  • Proficiency in other language(s) in addition to English.

Strongly Preferred: student or recent graduate with major or minor in Communications, Public Relations, Strategic Communications or equivalent experience in nonprofit communications and/or promotional campaigns.

Learning/professional development opportunities

The POA intern will gain valuable knowledge and experience in:

  • Working with a startup and implementing launches;
  • Developing a platform in/for a specific audience (in this case, the social justice activist community);
  • Developing, testing, implementing and evaluating a promotional strategy;
  • Research in the areas covered in POA’s work;
  • Writing promotional copy;

Publication credit: Likewise, intern will have the opportunity to contribute to writing posts and, in time, creating and publishing their own posts on the POA Journal blog.
