THE ORGANIZATION

Yamba Malawi transforms children’s lives by empowering communities to break the cycle of poverty and invest in their children’s futures. 

Founded in 2006, Yamba Malawi envisions a world where strong, self-reliant communities build brighter futures for children. Through holistic livelihood interventions centered on sustainable and scalable businesses, financial management, and coaching on childhood wellbeing, Yamba Malawi empowers communities to build brighter futures for children and improve outcomes across food security, health, education, and protection. Each year, Yamba Malawi’s livelihoods program touches the lives of over 100,000 children. 

Yamba Malawi is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a passionate team located in Lilongwe, Malawi and Brooklyn, New York.


THE POSITION

Yamba Malawi is seeking a dedicated, detail-oriented, and skilled writer to support the Development team’s efforts to grow institutional giving support through grant research and writing. This person will be highly organized, data-driven, and enthusiastic. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a critical period of organizational growth and learn how to cultivate and build an institutional funding portfolio. The intern will also gain valuable insight into the field of international development and the inner workings of an international NGO during a key period in the organization’s growth. 


SAMPLE PROJECTS

  • Conduct research on prospective institutional funders, including public development agencies, corporate sponsors, private and family foundations
  • Update and maintain Salesforce-powered grants management database
  • Conduct research on topics such as poverty graduation, early childhood development, small business coaching, or impacts of climate change in contexts of extreme poverty and summarize findings
  • Draft and compile materials to support grant applications and reports
  • Provide support for special projects


REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be passionate about the mission of the Organization
  • Recent graduate or current undergraduate or graduate student
  • Ability to handle multiple time-sensitive tasks simultaneously and prioritize tasks appropriately
  • Strong written communication skills
  • Experience with databases preferred but not required
  • Familiarity with poverty graduation programs and/or Malawi preferred but not required
  • Available at least 10 hours a week; either remotely or in Brooklyn office
