Overview of the Human Rights Foundation:

The Human Rights Foundation (HRF) is a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that promotes and protects human rights globally, with a focus on closed societies. HRF unites people in the common cause of defending human rights and promoting liberal democracy. Our mission is to ensure that freedom is both preserved and promoted around the world. We seek, in particular, to sustain the struggle for liberty in those areas where it is most under threat.

HRF is one of the few international organizations that focuses exclusively on promoting human rights in authoritarian regimes. Through our regime classification research, we are able to focus our resources on more than 90 countries ruled by authoritarian regimes —countries where democracies are non-existent or fraudulent, and where independent media, activists, think tanks, opposition parties, and NGOs are under permanent threat and are systematically prevented from having an alternative voice about domestic policy.

HRF’s work includes effective campaigns to free political prisoners, international events such as the Oslo Freedom Forum, and programs such as Flash Drives for Freedom that publicize human rights violators and directly support dissidents and human rights defenders at risk.

Responsibilities: The Legal and Policy intern will report to the senior lawyers and senior policy officer of HRF’s legal & policy team to provide research and writing support on projects relevant to HRF’s mission statement. This includes, but is not limited to, drafting submissions to the UN Human Rights Council, conducting research for HRF’s political regime research project, drafting legal and policy briefs and memos on topics related to HRF’s countries of focus, and working on identifying potential speakers and topics for discussion at HRF’s annual conference, the Oslo Freedom Forum.

Requirements: The ideal candidate is a highly motivated and detail-oriented law school student from an accredited law school, graduate student, or recent graduate with a background in political science, international relations, comparative politics, human rights, and/or international law. Highly-qualified undergraduate students will also be considered for the position. Strong research, writing, and analytical skills are essential. Exposure to democratization literature is an asset, but not required. Knowledge of a foreign language, especially Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and Spanish, is also a plus.
