The Uganda School Project (TUSP) – Project Assistant Internship

The Role

We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic intern to support day to day operations, impact evaluations, and exit strategy design and implementation for a small, grass roots charity based in rural eastern Uganda. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a genuine, sustainable difference in a beautiful part of the world and come away with life-changing experiences and valuable real-world experience.


Candidates would join the country manager and small team of Ugandan staff for a minimum of 6 months. We would like for the selected candidate to begin working as soon as possible. Although we cannot provide financial compensation for the position, room and board will be provided at no cost. Any additional expenses, such as flights, insurance, visas, and weekend travel and accommodations will be the responsibility of the intern.


Exact specifications of the role are fluid and are subject to change depending on resources and circumstances, but the key areas are as follows:


Microfinance Project

  • Project backstopping for TUSP’s ongoing Microfinance program that currently supports 50 women-owned businesses
  • Reconciliation/auditing of loan books and corresponding bank accounts
  • Attending repayment meetings with the community and breakfast discussions
  • Monitoring and evaluating the impact of the project via surveys with borrowers
  • Assisting in the design and implementation of an exit strategy for the project as the final loan cycle comes to a close


Educational Development Programme

  • Project backstopping for the construction of the two final classrooms at Bumakenya Primary School (four have been built prior)
  • Ongoing monitoring of upkeep of all facilities at the school: classrooms, water tanks, latrines, etc.
  • Project backstopping for all educational development projects, including the livestock income generation project, school mothers project, school lunches project, teacher trainings, and school library
  • Attending regular meetings with the school leadership and various community stakeholders to discuss ongoing projects, needs, etc.
  • Assisting in the design and implementation of an exit/hand-over strategy of all projects to the school

Other Miscellaneous Tasks

  • Assisting the Country Manager with social media and other marketing outlets as needed
  • Assisting the Country Manager with fundraising, including grant writing and research, as needed


Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, International Relations/Affairs, International Development, Management, or other related fields
  • Ability to work outside of one’s comfort zone and think outside the box
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Keen attention to detail and aptitude for problem-solving
  • Excellent computer skills, including familiarity with G Suite (especially Google Sheets)
  • Outstanding organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks
  • Independent worker with ability to work collaboratively with Country Manager


Desirable Qualifications

  • Familiarity with and experience in monitoring and evaluation of projects in international development, especially education and cash projects
  • Familiarity with and experience in project backstopping in international development, especially education and cash projects
  • Experience living and working in a developing country
  • Working knowledge of Luganda and/or Swahili
