Professional Growth and Development Opportunities

Under the guidance of Aulo Gelli, Senior Research Fellow, the intern will join the Poverty, Health, and Nutrition Division (PHND) to provide research support to the Soutenir l'Exploitation Familiale pour Lancer l'Élevage des Volailles et Valoriser l'Économie Rurale (SELEVER) study. The study aims to address key knowledge gaps on the impact of poultry value chain interventions on the diets, health and nutritional status of women and children.

The internship provides the opportunity to develop the following skills within the context of an international research and development organization:

  • Assist with data processing, survey data cleaning, and data analysis
  • Contribute to the preparation of research outputs
  • Build practical experience evaluating the impacts of food security and nutrition interventions
  • Build job market-relevant programming skills
  • Work with large, high quality research datasets
  • Gain practical experience from and learn with experienced researchers and research analysts
  • Gain a direct insight into the work of a renowned international research institute

Responsibilities:

Based on an observational, longitudinal study using 4 rounds of data from the SELEVER cluster randomized control trial in Burkina Faso, the intern will work with another intern and the SELEVER research team to:

  • Conduct a literature review on child disability and malnutrition
  • Generate population-based estimates on the prevalence of disability in preschool children in Burkina Faso
  • Examine relationships between child disability, nutrition status, and development through multivariable regression and structural equation models
  • Identify the potential for modifiable factors, including dietary diversity and household hygiene levels, to influence these relationships
  • Prepare a draft paper including the data analysis results

Duration:

  • Three months
  • Projected Start Date: June 1, 2021 (flexible)
  • Projected End Date: August 31, 2021 (flexible)

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s student or a recent Master’s graduate (within 6 months) in Economics, Statistics, Public Policy, Epidemiology, International Development, or a related field
  • Knowledge of a statistical package (R, Stata)” and added under Preferred skills: “Prior experience or coursework in Stata
  • Prior coursework in applied econometrics/statistics Demonstrated fluency in written and spoken English, with strong written skills
  • Ability to work independently and with initiative

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiar with issues related to nutrition and food security
  • Previous experience communicating complex research in various formats
  • Experience working in West Africa
  • Experience with economic modelling

Working Hours:

  • Part-time (20 hours/week)
