About Role:

The Scholarships Internship is a paid internship that assists the Scholarships Team at APIA Scholars with the general administration of our two scholarship programs: the APIA Scholarship and AANAPISI Scholarship. The Scholarship Intern will gain knowledge in scholarships management and administration, from the start of application and selection cycle through award management.

We welcome all applicants with a passion for improving educational access and career success for Asian & Pacific Islander American students and young professionals.

Must be located within the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Most of the work can be conducted remotely, but intern will have ability and opportunity to utilize APIA Scholars’ office located in downtown Washington, DC. Intern will occasionally be required to come to the office (in discussion with supervising staff). Intern will have to provide own transport to office.

Please note: current recipients of the APIA or AANAPISI Scholarship are not eligible for this internship, nor can someone be applying/intending to apply for the 2021-2022 AANAPISI Scholarship and/or 2022-2023 APIA Scholarship and hold this internship.


  • Be responsible for external communication with applicants (prospective and current), and recommenders through email, phone and potential other methods for the AANAPISI and APIA Scholarships
  • Develop materials to assist applicants with navigating application process for the AANAPISI and APIA Scholarship
  • Track and collect scholarship disbursement information for the AANAPISI Scholarship
  • Report outstanding scholarship disbursements and assist in their reissue for the AANAPISI and APIA Scholarships
  • Work with the Communication team to revitalize scholarship recipient section of website
  • Respond to basic data requests from Programs, Development, Communications and other departments of the organization
  • Conduct outreach and recruitment for volunteer application reviewers for the AANAPISI and APIA Scholarships
  • Other tasks tied to the administration of the scholarships program as needed

Please note, the responsibilities listed above are for over the course of the internship, and which responsibilities will be the primary focus will shift over the course of the internship.

Desired Qualifications:

  • A 3rd or 4th year undergraduate, graduate student or recent college graduate (undergraduate or above)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong Microsoft Office suite skills, with an emphasis on Excel spreadsheet experience
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and work against tight deadlines
  • Ability to work well on an individual and collaborative basis
  • Flexibility and the ability to multi-task and prioritize competing deadlines
  • Comfortability learning new software or platforms in short timeframe
  • Strong interpersonal skills and cultural competency
  • Experience or interest in working with Asian American, Pacific Islander and Native Hawaiian students and communities
