Housing Alliance of Pennsylvania AmeriCorps VISTA: Training Coordinator

The Housing Alliance of Pennsylvania is looking for a highly motivated, self-starter individual to be part of our team, working to promote solutions to affordable housing, homelessness, eviction, and blight issues across Pennsylvania. The AmeriCorps VISTA will receive direction and one-on-one support from the Housing Alliance staff but must be able to work independently. Successful candidates will also be able to communicate effectively and compassionately with people with lived experience and organizations providing housing and supportive services to lower income families.

The Housing Alliance is currently working in a remote environment. However, that may change in the future and/or office provisions may be required for AmeriCorps VISTAS per federal requirements of the AmeriCorps program.

AmeriCorps VISTAs serve full-time for one year, beginning on August 30, 2022.

About the Team’s Positions 

1.    Training Coordinator – The AmeriCorps VISTA team member will provide program and logistical support for the Housing Alliance’s key educational initiatives designed to build and expand knowledge of successful strategies to make a home within reach for all Pennsylvanians. The Training Coordinator as part of the Annual Homes Within Reach Conference planning team will ensure that workshop sessions for the in-person Dec 7-9, 2022 conference in Hershey, PA, are well designed with well-prepared speakers. The Training Coordinator will also assist in coordinating webinars and other events. The Housing Alliance’s goal is to build and expand knowledge of solutions, and this position will play a key role in meeting this organizational objective. 

The AmeriCorps VISTA member will work to expand the scale, reach, and effectiveness of programs that increase housing opportunities for low income households. Working closely with local partners and individuals with lived experience will be critical to their work. Each AmeriCorps team member will also build capacity for the Housing Alliance and its network of partners by:

·      Developing, planning, and organizing outreach and engagement activities and events

·      Conducting data collection, analysis, and research

·      Promoting best practices in addressing affordable housing issues that could be replicable or expanded in Pennsylvania

·      Developing partnerships with community groups, local governments, and persons with lived experience

·      Researching housing solutions that could benefit low income individuals and families, persons experiencing homelessness, and low-income communities in Pennsylvania

Preferred Skills/ Experience 

Applicants to the Housing Alliance’s Housing Capacity AmeriCorps VISTA Team should have: 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
  • Competence in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 
  • Research skills and ability to analyze data  
  • Familiarity with social service programs or programs addressing affordable housing, eviction, homelessness, or blight  
  • Pride in performing tasks promptly, completely, and accurately 
  • Ability to work with partners and the public in a helpful and supportive

Requirements for full-year VISTAs 

This position is being offered through the AmeriCorps VISTA program. Visit https://americorps.gov/ for more information on the AmeriCorps VISTA program, its qualifications and benefits. The AmeriCorps VISTAs will serve in a full-time capacity for one-year. The Housing Alliance typically works 9AM to 5PM, Monday to Friday. However, there will be instances of the necessity to work outside of these hours to participate in and set up meetings and events (in-person and virtual) with local partners and stakeholders, including our annual conference in Hershey, Pennsylvania.  

To qualify as an AmeriCorps VISTA, you must: 

  • Be 18 or older 
  • Have U.S. citizenship or have a legal residency status (See the AmeriCorps Fit Finder for more information on citizenship or residency requirements) 
  • Undergo a criminal background check, if your application is accepted  

Benefits

As a full-year AmeriCorps VISTA, you will receive:

·      A bi-weekly living allowance

·      A settling-in allowance of up to $750 and relocation travel allowance (if you’re relocating more than 50 miles)

·      An education award ($6,345) or end of service award (approximately $1,800)

·      The Housing Alliance can offer a housing and / or grocery stipend to those that qualify.

Other benefits through the AmeriCorps VISTA program include:

·      Ten days of personal leave

·      Ten days of medical leave

·      A health care allowance or health benefit plan through AmeriCorps

·      Loan forbearance or deferment for federal student loans

·      One year of Non-Competitive Eligibility (NCE) for federal jobs
