INTERNS WORK ON ECOLOGICAL CITY: A Community-Based Arts and Climate Solutions Action Project

ECOLOGICAL CITY

Earth Celebrations' ECOLOGICAL CITY,  is a community-based arts and environmental action project to celebrate and bring together climate resiliency and ecological sustainability solutions throughout the gardens, neighborhood and waterfront on the Lower East Side of New York City, connecting local efforts to city and global climate challenges.

ECOLOGICAL CITY applies Earth Celebrations' pioneering creative strategies of cultural organizing, applying the arts, community engagement and environmental action, developed over the past 28 years, that were successful in preserving hundreds of community gardens throughout New York City and engaging people in river restoration efforts from the Hudson River Estuary in downtown Manhattan to a severely polluted river in Madurai, South India. The gardens that had been preserved, after Hurricane Sandy proved themselves in a new role of climate resiliency as they absorbed flood waters that severely affected the neighborhood, filtering pollution runoff and transforming carbon into oxygen and clean air. Hurricane Sandy relief funds brought 2 million dollars to the gardens for green infrastructure design projects to enhance their resiliency initiatives  including water harvesting ponds, solar gazebos, rain/pollinator gardens, permeable sidewalks, roof top agriculture/vertical farming. At the same time redevelopment and coastal resiliency plans along the waterfront include oyster planting to organically cleanse the river, wetlands to buffer erosion and a rolling hillside seawall berm to buffer sea level rise and flooding due to consequences of climate change.

ECOLOGICAL CITY through 6 months of creative engagement design/planning sessions and ecological arts workshops, builds creative collaborations connecting artists and diverse sector partners groups with gardens, neighborhood sustainability sites and the East River Park waterfront. Residents, partner groups, gardeners and artists collaborate developing visual art and performance works of dance, music, theater and poetry, exploring these sites and their climate and sustainability solutions. The artistic works are featured in a culminating 6-hour ECOLOGICAL CITY: Procession for Climate Solutions on Saturday May 11, 2019 with 20 site-specific performances of dance, music, theater and poetry throughout the gardens, neighborhood and waterfront.
