Description

The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society (NYG&B), a nonprofit organization, preserves, documents, and shares the stories of families across the state of New York. We engage with genealogists, biographers, historians, and anyone with an interest in researching their personal family history or the family histories of others. We aim to establish the broader contexts of New York’s past, as well as to foster connections between New York’s past and the present.

We offer internships to college and to qualified high school students. Internships typically last eight to ten weeks, pay a $100 weekly stipend, and require a commitment of approximately three days. Most interns are enrolled in college; highly qualified high school students may also apply. Interns work on projects in a variety of areas including digitization, indexing, research, records retrieval, publications, digital services, program management and event planning. Academic internships for college and library school credit and general (non-credit) internships are available throughout the year.

The NYG&B is pleased to offer academic internships for school credit to:

Graduate students in the fields of library and information science, archival management, public history, and records management.

College students in the fields of history, American Studies, communications, digital media, and other relevant fields.

Academic internships will be tailored to a student’s academic needs and the NYG&B’s institutional goals.

Non-credit internships are also available to college and high school students.

Interested candidates should e-mail a resume and cover letter to intern@nygbs.org. Interviews are required. Applications are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis.

Benefits

Interns are encouraged to research their own family history while working here. The staff is a small, dedicated team eager to engage interns in a meaningful and productive way.
