Summer 2020 Job Description

The Marine Debris Intern will help address environmental impacts from pollution. This internship brings together interests in environmental education, science, public policy, and citizen action. The Marine Debris Intern will assist with the Corporate Beach Sweeps and statewide Beach Sweeps, as well as water quality programs. The Marine Debris Intern will gain experience in education, event coordination, research, public speaking, writing, and organizing.

Specific Responsibilities

Assist the Coastal Pollution Prevention Coordinator in the organization and coordination of the Corporate Beach Sweeps program along with pre-planning other educational programs. Specifically, the intern will:

Handle the logistics of the Corporate Beach Sweep Program

o  Attend all Corporate Beach Sweeps

o  Organize the logistics and pre-event details of the Corporate Summer Programs (i.e. lunch, transportation, rest room access, locations and supply inventory)

o  Educate and motivate Corporate Beach Sweeps volunteers on site, as well as oversee other COA interns who may help

o  Provide the educational overview, engage with volunteers, and lead several Corporate Sweeps with the assistance of COA staff

o  Compile data and photos after each Corporate Sweep, as well as conduct follow-up with each corporation, including sending report and photos

o  Create a pre- and post-event survey to gauge behavioral change in participants and to provide companies with insightful information

o  Produce a 2020 Corporate Beach Sweeps Report

o  Research & create 2-3 new educational activities to introduce new teambuilding programs and interactive activities into the existing program

Assist the COA staff with Beach Sweeps and other programs

o  Assist with compilation and analysis of Spring Beach Sweeps data

o  Assist with planning for the Fall Beach Sweeps, which may include supply inventory and preparation, outreach to towns, Beach Captains, and Junior Beach Captains

o  Assist with outreach, as needed

Assist COA staff with the Delaware Sweeps

o  Assist as needed, help run cleanups, compile data, assist with the Plastic Source Investigation program

By the end of the internship, the Marine Debris Intern will have:

  • Conducted and coordinated a Citizen Science program
  • Managed volunteers
  • Reduced marine pollution
  • Developed skills in community outreach and organization, project coordination, data management and analysis
  • Produced a Corporate Beach Sweeps Report, which is crucial to the continuation of the program and a provides professional writing experience

General Program Coordination

·        Represent COA in a positive, professional and friendly manner

·        Maintain focus and message on pollution prevention

·        Stay conversant and current on COA priorities and programs

·        Update relevant COA materials, fact sheets, and write monthly newsletter articles

·        Be flexible to help on any project at any time, as needed

Time and Location Requirements

The summer internship is a full-time position and is located at COA’s office in Long Branch, NJ. It is essential to the success of the program and the overall internship that the applicant lives within close proximity to the office. No housing or transportation is provided. Official office hours are 9am to 5pm, Monday – Friday, and sometimes longer. Attendance at some evening and/or weekend meetings and/or events may be necessary.

Business casual attire is expected and can vary depending on activities. Monthly stipend and travel expenses (excluding commuting) are paid. College credit (arranged by the student with the university/college) is available. Start date is as early in May as possible and end date is as late in August as possible.
