African People & Wildlife (APW) works to ensure a future where humans and wild animals thrive living side by side. Our team collaborates with local communities to create effective, sustainable solutions that improve the lives of rural Africans while protecting the natural world. Over the next decade, APW seeks to accelerate our impact and reach as we transition from an internationally recognized grassroots innovator to a global influencer in community-driven conservation.

APW is seeking a marketing and communications intern to work remotely with our team in the U.S. and Tanzania. This is a great opportunity for graduate students majoring in marketing, communications, or a related field to gain practical experience in a nonprofit setting. The intern will help to build APW’s digital presence, grow our online audience, and provide a wide range of support to the Director of Marketing and Communications. The ideal candidate is a strong writer and communicator who is creative, organized, and able to work independently. This is a part-time, unpaid internship. Interested applicants should send a resume and cover letter to lmilton@africanpeoplewildlife.org

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis. When applying, please specify the internship term you are seeking (spring, summer, fall, or winter). Long-term internships will also be considered.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Support social media strategy development and implementation
  • Research, write, and post audience-specific content for APW’s social media channels in accordance with organizational voice and current best practices
  • Stay abreast of the latest trends in nonprofit online fundraising and social media techniques
  • Assist with search engine optimization
  • Implement and monitor Google Ads
  • Utilize Google Analytics tools to review key metrics and inform online strategy
  • Provide support and writing assistance for content development and media outreach
  • Assist with the development of an online store
  • Assist with additional projects as assigned by the Director of Marketing and Communications

Desired qualifications:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to organize time, work independently and manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively and efficiently
  • Demonstrated understanding of current digital and social media best practices and trends, including knowledge of channel optimization for maximum reach and visibility
  • Experience creating a wide range of content for Facebook, Instagram and Twitter; knowledge of Facebook’s advertising platform required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Photoshop
  • Background or strong demonstrated interested in wildlife/environmental conservation is preferred
  • A background in graphic design and Adobe Creative Suite is helpful
  • Experience with WordPress is a plus
