Background:

ESD Global is a 501c3 non-profit organization established in 2017 in the United States of America. Its mission is to establish Empowerment Self-Defense (ESD) as a key violence prevention strategy globally for women and marginalized populations. ESD is a comprehensive, research based, and holistic method of violence resistance education. ESD Global recognizes that violence against women happens on a continuum of gender-based discrimination and inequality, therefore the trainings are tailored on the social and cultural dynamics specific to violence perpetrated against women and marginalized communities.

Under the direct supervision of the ESD Global Executive Director, the Regional Program Manager for Africa is in charge of implementing organizations strategies through regional activities, creating partnerships with local organizations interested in ESD trainings and providing technical support to the implementation of trainings in the region. The Regional Program Manager works in close collaboration with the Regional Program Officers for Africa, the other Regional Managers, Administration staff as well as the Director of Communication. As a fellow, you will report to the Regional Program Manager for Africa and the Communications Director, under the overall supervision of ESD Global Executive Director. We are an international team who works in a dynamic and informal atmosphere, and we expect our fellows to become vital members of the team.

Duties and Responsibilities

The fellow will be expected to create a communication plan to raise awareness and engage a variety of audiences about the work ESDG is undertaking in the region through various channels of communication. The fellow is expected to address the following issues in completing this assignment: 1. Communication Development (35%)

  • Content Creation:
  • Create and manage communication materials such as flyers, posters, videos, infographics, as well as media such as website, newsletters, email marketing, presentations, etc.
  • Develop text and video content by interviewing ESD Global community members; o Plan, manage and promote online learning activities including classes, courses, webinars, campaigns and meetings by managing logistics, engaging appropriate audiences including ESD Global members;
  • Draft press releases, articles, key messages and other advocacy materials; o Develop a networking strategy with organizations and press in different African countries.

2. Social Media Community Management (25%):

  • Design and implement campaigns to boost engagement, build partnerships, and inform audiences
  • Attend ESD Global events or webinars and write blogs/ summaries to promote them; o Coordinate the translation, adaptation, or rewriting of ESD Global posts and disseminate materials to stakeholders in the Africa region;
  • Update the social media channels
  • Assist with streamlining social media accounts ensuring uniform content and tone of voice for landing pages, graphics, and other elements within the communities’
  • Develop and maintain social media and blogging calendar and cross post relevant ESD Africa news o Maintain files, databases, and systems relevant to ESD Global digital presence.
  • Build relationships with influential social media users and explore partnership opportunities.

3. Technical Assistance in ESDG Training preparation and implementation (40%)

  • Lead communications preparation and implementation for in-person trainings in the Africa region (contracts with vendors, compliance with ESDG procedures, etc.)
  • Provide support in the preparation, delivery and implementation of ESDG online trainings in the Africa region

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the fellowship the fellow should have:

  • A good working knowledge of the use of communication tools and their impact on regional organizations (including INGOs, NGOs and CSOs).
  • A better understanding of complexity of an international organization and its impact at the national and regional levels;
  • An improved understanding of gender equality and women’s empowerment and how ESD Global’s work is changing global perspectives about these areas.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Studies in international relations, development studies including Gender studies, Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related field

Language:

  • Fluency in spoken and written English required
  • Working knowledge in spoken and written French or Portuguese is desirable

Experience:

  • Knowledge and understanding of the international development community
  • 1-2 years of experience in research and analysis skills (online and offline)
  • 1-3 years of experience with developing communication materials such as newsletters, blog posts, posters, etc.
  • Familiarity with online learning platforms and tools to run online webinars, interviews, campaigns
  • Familiarity with social media tools (e.g. Twitter, Instagram, Tik Tok and Facebook), Canva, and with Microsoft Office products (e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Excel)

Skills:

  • An ability to consistently demonstrate ESD Global values
  • Attention to detail and motivation to learn
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills, and a passion for writing and photography

Fellowship conditions

  1. Applicants must have graduated with a university degree, the equivalent, or be enrolled in the final academic year;
  2. Applicants from African countries will be considered first tier candidates;
  3. The fellow must have a personal computer and reliable internet connection for video meetings; An ESD Global official email will be provided for the selected candidate;
  4. The fellow must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan (if not covered by NHS);
  5. ESD Global part-time fellowship program provides a scholarship of $1,500 per month;
  6. ESD Global accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the fellowship;
  7. Fellows are not ESDG staff members;
  8. There is no expectation of employment with ESD Global following a fellowship.
