CPPP seeks a skilled digital communicator who shares our vision for Texas and will use a range of creative strategies to develop compelling content and get it in front of the right people in the right formats at the right times.

This energetic communications professional will need experience in communications, journalism, or public relations with a broad range of skills, including traditional media, writing, editing, digital publishing, new media, and other creative communications strategies to advance social change.

Social media strategy, implementation and monitoring is an important element of the job, as well as a willingness to explore cutting-edge communications tools and formats.

Overview of position:

CPPP seeks a skilled communicator who shares our vision for Texas and will use a range of creative strategies to develop compelling content and get it in front of the right people in the right formats at the right times. The Communications Associate reports to CPPP’s Communications Director and works closely with all staff members. This energetic communications professional will need experience in communications, journalism, or public relations with a broad range of skills, including traditional media, writing, editing, digital publishing, new media, and other creative communications strategies to advance social change. Social media strategy, implementation and monitoring is an important element of the job, as well as a willingness to explore cutting-edge communications tools and formats. The Communications Associate will be a vital member of the CPPP communications team and will help with editing, designing, and distributing CPPP research and analysis and actively increasing public awareness among target audiences.

 

Roles and responsibilities:

• Work collaboratively with staff to develop communications plans and effective campaigns to advance our policy goals and expand CPPP’s audience;

• Implement processes to manage a complex communications workload that includes rapid response products, medium-term reports, and longer-term campaigns;

• Assist staff in building their communications skills, including delivering trainings;

• Work with Development team on event planning, materials, and fundraising-related promotion;

• Write press releases and promotional materials; proactively pitch stories and shape coverage;

• Monitor local, regional, and national media and identify opportunities for CPPP to shape or respond to coverage on our issues;

• Watch legislative proceedings, whether in-person or online, and live-tweet as needed;

• Edit and review publications, including policy reports and briefs, op-eds, and other materials;

• Oversee and cultivate the use of storytelling, video, and other creative strategies to further CPPP’s message;

• Work with staff, designers, printers, and other vendors to create and distribute publications;

• Oversee the CPPP website and blog, and manage electronic communications, including email newsletters and updates;

• Engage stakeholders, influencers and partners through social media;

• Assure consistent image of CPPP throughout external communications and reinforce internal style and formatting policies for CPPP materials;

• Incorporate messaging and framing guidance from partner groups into CPPP communications, and assist in developing strategic communications for CPPP coalitions;

• Assess the effectiveness of CPPP communications, including the development, collection, and reporting of performance metrics;

• Other duties as needed.

 

Required qualifications:

• A bachelor’s or a master’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field and/or at least 2 years of professional experience in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field;

• Strong writing and editing skills, including the ability to explain complex issues clearly;

• Strong familiarity with information technology and social media;

• Strong familiarity with website design and maintenance and with desktop publishing, database, word processing, and spreadsheet software;

• Understanding of video production, including basic camera setup, editing software (Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Media Encoder or similar), and knowledge of file formats;

• Knowledge of front-end languages such as HTML, CSS, or JavaScript + web design software

 

Bonus qualifications (not required):

• Familiarity with graphic design programs, especially Adobe Creative Suite

• Knowledge of FTP software

• Knowledge of operating a Lumix GH4 or similar camera for still pictures / video production
