The People’s Lobby & Reclaim Chicago is a membership-driven grassroots organization devoted to organizing widespread support for public policies and candidates -- including people from our communities -- that put the needs of people and the planet before the interests of big corporations and the very rich. We train leaders to build bases in our communities, organize support for progressive legislation, endorse candidates and take direct action to pressure elected officials and other powerful people to put the interests of people and the planet first.


Purpose: To cultivate political and grasstops organizational relationships as well as build out our candidate pipeline and co-governing structure in order to strengthen the organization’s legislative, electoral and fundraising infrastructure and capacity programs at the state and local levels.

The political director will work with leadership to contribute to the political,legislative and grassroots program by helping to design and implement targeted electoral plans for specific geographies and strategic involvement in legislative fights across Chicago, Cook County and Illinois. They are also responsible for building and expanding the organization's profile in the political sphere, manage relationships, and support outreach as needed.


Primary Responsibilities

Cultivating Political Relationships:

● Increase our organizational strength by developing and enhancing working relationships with elected leaders, labor,

community organizations and advocacy groups

● Supporting organizing staff in building relationships with their local elected leaders and their staff


Co-Governing:

● Develop and implement a movement politics program - a structure for political accountability and relationship building

with elected leaders through our issue campaign work and grassroots organizing

● Coordinate electoral and legislative planning for targeted strategic campaigns with coalition members, allies and

elected leaders and move them on our issues

Candidate Pipeline:

● Recruit and train candidates to run for office in key districts

● Work with the Organizing Director to create and implement a training program that will create a pipeline of

candidates, staffers, campaigners, and member leaders who can run and win transformational campaigns.


Skills Required

● 3-5 years experience advancing a political program at a national and/or state organization

● Familiarity with the political landscape/progressive infrastructure in Chicago, Cook County and Illinois

● Strong communication skills, ability to work independently, in politically sensitive environments

● Must be willing to work irregular and long hours

● Ability to direct staff and work across departments and work in a team

● Excellent problem-solving and relational skills, proven track record of follow-through and accountability

● Willing and able to connect on personal experiences of injustice and have a commitment to racial, gender and

economic justice

● Familiarity with database tools, NGPVAN, Action Network, etc. a plus
