The Senior Director People, Talent & Culture will be responsible for leading HMI's HR strategy and support to ensure that HMI advances from its current HR operations to a strategic and cutting-edge HR 4.0 vision and capacity. This position will help lead our efforts to develop an inclusive and positive organizational culture, high quality talent recruiting strategy, impactful performance and learning system, comprehensive compensation strategy, and a nimble and employee friendly cloud based HR solution to support all of HMI's core HR transactions, onboarding, benefits and HR workflow. The Senior Director will contribute at both a hands-on and strategic level to support the CEO, COO and members of the leadership and management team to help foster an engaged employee experience, and effective HR resource to help support the organization through its next phase of growth.



People Operations


  • Own, launch and provide exemplary leadership of all People Operations initiatives and employee engagement programs and activities


  • Serve as the escalation point for all employee relations issues and develop strategies and intervention to address them; help guide and support management and employee actions


  • Lead efforts and solutions in coaching, counseling and advising management and staff to

ensure positive resolution of employment related matters


  • Build trust with employees across all layers of the organization and be an active listener and

effective problem solver of employee issues while helping support organizational priorities and goals


  • Oversee the organization's performance management program, policies and processes,

including system design, individual development plans, result tracking, career pathways

and succession planning


  • Help drive a high performing mindset that focuses on personal and professional development

and career progression


  • Establish solutions and strategies to empower leaders to be better manage and prepare high-potential employees for management roles


  • Partner with internal stakeholders to implement strategies for employee engagement and retention


  • Help support staff through the onboarding and introductory process to the organization as

well as when there is a change in employment status, including separation from employment


  • Work with outside legal counsel to develop and ensure that employment policies and practices are consistent with best practices and trends, fully compliant with applicable Federal, State and local law and other employer regulatory requirements governing the workplace


  • Utilize data and key performance metrics to identify trends and recommend proactive solutions

for employee performance, retention and engagement


  • Participate in the exit interview process with employees and integrate feedback from this

process to shape future people and retention strategy for the organization


  • Design and administer the organization's compensation program, policies and procedures

and ensure they are aligned with the organization's goals and market competition


  • Help design a positive employee benefit program responsive to employee need. Administer

all related processes, workflows and reporting requirements related to the organization's

benefit plans including but not limited to: Medical, Dental and Vision; Life Insurance;

401K Plan; FSA Plan; EAP; Short-term Disability, etc.  


  • Will oversee the Manager for Community Engagement and the onboarding and engagement

of volunteers in addition to supervising the Assistant supporting People, Talent & Culture operations




  • Develop and execute a talent strategy for the organization to attract and retain the best talent

in the market promoting HMI as "employer of choice"


  • Provide out of the box thinking on how to attract and find talent in a competitive marketplace

while building pipelining plan to cultivate talent pools and drive both quality and speed in the talent acquisition process


  • Partner with Managers to understand, anticipate and assist with talent needs


  • Inspire and manage the organization's diversity and inclusion program to ensure that talent recruited across the organization reflects the population served by HMI


  • Manage the organization's affirmative action program and other strategies to foster compliance with applicable law and regulatory programs that support diversity efforts


  • Select and manage all vendor and service provider partnerships to augment and support the overall talent strategy for the organization

  • Help champion and build HMI's organizational culture assisting employees across the organization adhere to our values through effective programs and internal communications

that inspire commitment to HMI, our mission and a positive employee experience


  • Help cultivate an organizational culture that promotes exceptional talent, performance and

the highest achievement in our people


  • Collaborate with the senior leadership team and managers on developing a culture of learning, and continuous feedback by creating experiences that engage teams at all levels


  • Coordinate all employee events and culture activities as well as people rewards and recognition programs




HR Systems & Support


  • Lead efforts to design and establish workflow processes that are nimble, maximize efficiency

and supported by cutting edge technology to ensure legal and regulatory compliance in all employment related activities and operations of the organization



  • Maintain and manage the HR portal that tracks employee records and all onboarding and workflow processes including new hire documentation, leave time, performance evaluations, payroll interface, compensation and benefits and job status changes


  • Build the foundation of a strong data-driven People Ops organization that provides key performance metrics and people data to help support decision making for the organization


  • Implement and manage HR systems and workflow process that are nimble, fully digitized and have the capacity to scale up to support the planned growth and expansion of the organization


  • Help troubleshoot and positively resolve employee questions and issues related to all aspects of their employment experience with HMI


  • Oversee and administer the contracting and onboarding process, including the review and execution of contractual agreements with consultants/independent contractors


  • Maintain and develop systems to track all people time, attendance, leave balances and other employee data and facilitate this information through employee self-service options on the

employee portal


  • Manage all outside vendor relationships and partners that support various aspects of the people, talent and culture function, including negotiations and implementation of contractual agreements

between HMI and these entities


May be assigned other related job duties as determined by the Executive Management of HMI




  • Master's Degree in Human Resources or related field plus seven (7) years' HR/People Operations experience of which at least three years were at the Manager or Director level; or Bachelor's Degree plus 10 years' professional HR/People Operations experience of which at least five years were at the Manager or Director level running the full spectrum of HR services
  • Proven successful track record of HR experience in a social service, education, community healthcare or other nonprofit setting is strongly preferred
  • Must have demonstrated experience in talent recruiting, building high performance teams and fostering a positive employee experience in organizations
  • Strong understanding of employment law, government compliance regulations, and building

and administering compensation and benefit programs

  • Experience and demonstrated knowledge of cloud based technology solutions to support all

People operations




  • A strong commitment to leading best practice people operations and continuous

improvement and advancement of these resources to support the organization

  • A natural mentor, coach and facilitator of people relationships able to influence a

diversity of workstyles and personalities

  • Committed to working as a positive team supporting collaboration
  • Excellent project management skills and managing multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Superior communicator orally and with the written word and able to effectively provide constructive and strategic feedback
  • Familiarity with and awareness of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth issues

and multicultural competencies
