Here’s Where You Come In:


As the Development Manager: Foundation and Institutional Giving, you will work closely with the Executive Directors, Program Directors and other development staff in the Playworks NorCal region to chart the growth and strategic response to an ever-increasing demand for the organization’s programs and services in the Bay Area and Northern California. In this role you are directly responsible for the identification of opportunities, as well as the preparation, submission and management of funding proposals to private and corporate foundations in Northern California. Support from foundations currently represents approximately 30% of Playworks NorCal’s nearly $2 million development target. You will have responsibility for a target of approximately $650,000 annually. You will be a collaborative and innovative leader for the Playworks NorCal region, with an understanding of strength-based organizational culture, passion about Playworks’ mission and a commitment to education and youth development.

This position will report directly to the Silicon Valley Regional Director (but may physically sit in any of our Bay Area offices) and will work in close collaboration with San Francisco and East Bay Executive Directors to meet strategic goals and objectives.


Specifically, you will manage Northern California Institutional and Foundation giving in the following ways:

  • Understand Playworks’ mission, impact and goals to effectively research, monitor and identify new potential sources of funding from foundations to support programs and events
  • Write grant proposals and requests for foundation and corporate funding
  • Design, implement and be accountable for calendar and timeline for all grant opportunities and work closely with development team and finance team to ensure that all reports for foundation & corporate funders are drafted and submitted in a timely fashion
  • In collaboration with Playworks’ national team, perform prospect research on private, public and corporate foundations to evaluate prospects for grants and maintain in Salesforce database
  • Build relationships with new and existing institutional donors, working closely with the Regional Executive Directors and Development team
  • Comply with all grants reporting as required by foundation/corporate donors, with support of regional teams
  • Track national trends impacting support from corporations and foundations to educational programs and program specific funding
  • Assist with other fundraising projects as requested


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent combination of experience and education) required.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years professional experience in fundraising and grant writing.
  • Strong knowledge of Northern California Corporate and Institutional Philanthropy.
  • Demonstrated analytical and persuasive writing skills (especially in grant writing and corporate foundation strategies) as well as superior editing skills under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment while keeping a keen eye on detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent communication skills, to include comfort engaging and partnering with a variety of stakeholder groups, such as board members, program directors and other senior leaders both in person and in writing.
  • Ability to convey complex information in a clear manner to a diverse audience.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to set priorities and manage multiple simultaneous tasks under minimal supervision in an organized, effective and efficient manner while meeting aggressive deadlines and maintaining positive relationships over time.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office. Knowledge of Google Apps and Salesforce a strong plus!
  • Successful experience interpreting complex grant funding requirements, submissions, and budget projections.
  • Ability to thrive in an entrepreneurial, team-oriented, and mission driven environment that places a strong value on collaboration.
  • Demonstrated success in building strong relationships among teams; working collaboratively and thoughtfully focusing on a commitment to teamwork with the ability to proactively plan and delegate to team members.
  • The strongest candidate will have the demonstrated ability to maintain poise and demeanor appropriate to portray an image of professionalism as defined by Playworks and possess a documented history of successful corporate and foundation funding solicitation and follow up.
  • Regular travel throughout the Northern California region is required. Travel will be widely dispersed across the region, therefore daily access to reliable transportation is required.
  • If a Playworks employee is required to drive a vehicle for work related purposes (not commuting purposes) the employee must complete an authorization form and provide us with evidence of valid, current driver's license and proof of liability/collision/property damage insurance with minimum coverage of $50,000 each accident/ $100,000 each occurrence.
