POSITION SUMMARY

The Community Engagement Contractor is a short-term limited temporary position with the Public Policy and advocacy team at The Mockingbird Society. This temporary position is back filling an employee on leave until February 2022. King County is working on preventing and ending youth homelessness, this position will play a key role in working with the King County Advocacy coordinator on outreach and strategizing to advocate for authentically elevating the voice of youth who have experienced homelessness so they may effectively respond to proposals and present new ideas for how King County addresses youth homelessness through a combination of funding, services, and policies. This position will especially seek opportunities to leverage and amplify youth voice in the new King County Regional Homelessness Authority (KCRHA). This position will represent TMS in established coalitions, strengthen our partnerships with agencies already engaged and reach out to community to diversify those involved and raise awareness of youth homelessness.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

• Maintain and grow collaborative relationships with youth organizations in King County.

• Assist in establishing more regional and diverse partnerships with a specific focus on South King County, East King County, Rural King County, Black, Indigenous and POC-led groups.

• Assist in developing resources to educate other youth organizations on the connection to youth homelessness and other cross system issues.

• Partner with the King County Advocacy Coordinator to engage youth with lived experience to identify opportunities for youth voice in county and regional authority decision making.

• Represent TMS in key regional coalitions focused on addressing homelessness and/or advancing racial equity.

• Support King County Advocacy Coordinator in organizing partners to engage at advocacy opportunities, prep young people to testify at council meetings or participate in meetings, and support coordinator prep for county or executive meetings.

• Other duties as assigned.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience with, and/or commitment to having, race equity, social justice, and LGBTQ/cultural competence be a workplace priority.

• At least two years of experience in community organizing, public policy, youth development, community organizing, and/or related fields.

• Experience with homelessness or related human services policy.

• Knowledge of King County political process and programs.

• Experience working in partnership with multiple levels of partners and diverse groups.

• Excellent presentation, facilitation, and public speaking skills.

• Understanding of, and commitment to, youth/adult partnership philosophy.

• Ability to multitask, meet deadlines, and balance priorities.

• Bachelor’s degree in social work, public policy, public administration, or related field, or a comparable combination of education and experience.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

• Lived experience in the foster care system and/or with youth homelessness is a plus.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• Upon date of hire, must be able to pass a Washington State and national criminal history check.

• Ability to travel locally and occasionally statewide, with infrequent national travel for conference and events. Must have valid driver’s license, appropriate insurance and access to a vehicle or source of transportation for regular business use.

• Available to work some evenings and weekends.

Salary

The approved salary range for this position is between $23.00 and $25.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications. The hourly wage is based on a 36-hour, flexible work week.
