Position: Elementary Education Manager - Academics

Details: Horton’s Kids is seeking an Elementary Education Manager – Academics to run academic programs for roughly 80 children in grades 3-6 who participate in Horton’s Kids programs. This is a crucial position that drives the organization’s efforts to improve the academic skills of elementary and middle school participants to create academic intervention plans to guide their academic and ultimately their high school readiness.

Reporting directly to the Elementary Programs Director and coordinating closely with other program staff, this position oversees curriculum, assessment and academic intervention, which take place in the afternoons and evenings throughout the week. Additionally, this position will support the broader goals of the organization, particularly with regard to health and basic needs, youth development, social emotional learning, enrichment, and management of the Horton’s Kids Community Resource Center.

Core responsibilities of this position include:

·        Develop relationships with 3rd - 6th grade participants and their families

·        Motivate and inspire children to learn and grow academically, emotionally, and socially

·        Plan and manage academic programs in tutoring programs

·        Support adult volunteer tutors, most of whom do not have experience as educators, in delivering academic supports and interventions to children

·        Evaluate student skills using a variety of assessments for literacy skills improvement

·        Create individualized academic plans to ensure academic goals are being met quarterly

·        Develop and cultivate relationships with school administrators, teachers, and staff on behalf of children and families to support school advocacy

·        Serve as the staff lead to advise families on their school choice options and the lottery process

·        Coordinate with other staff members, including mental health partners, to ensure participants receive personalized, comprehensive, and effective interventions

·        Represent the organization at external events

·        Track, gather, and evaluate data for program evaluation and impact of program quality

Qualifications:

·        Minimum of three years as a classroom teacher in elementary/middle school setting (3rd grade and up)

·        Experience working with high-risk students and families who come from under-resourced, urban backgrounds

·        Strong behavior management and classroom management strategies

·        Experience in observing, providing feedback, and coaching adults on instruction and behavior management

·        Ability to form lasting relationships with both students and families

·        Experience with administering and analyzing interim academic assessments

·        Knowledgeable in identifying and implementing elementary and middle school secondary literacy recovery strategies

·        Proven track record of significantly improving academic performance of students who are below grade level

·        Knowledge of the DC educational landscape and school choice options

·        Demonstrated commitment to racial equity and social justice for children

·        Has successfully taken ownership of a long-term project – from envisioning impact, to identifying strategies to taking the necessary steps to achieve the intended outcome

·        Has successfully worked in a team environment as well as independently

·        Skilled at large group facilitation with children, youth, and adults

·        Developed project implementation and management skills
