As a member of the Food Bank’s development team, the Communications Coordinator is responsible for creating communications that persuade and motivate. S/he distills complex issues into clear, concise, and engaging content for diverse audiences. S/he is an accomplished digital citizen who gracefully navigates the social media and digital marketing landscapes, communicating with a combination of whimsy, emotion and persuasiveness.


This individual works with the Communications and Marketing Manager to ensure the integrity of Food Bank branding and messaging and to develop/implement an integrated strategy to engage and build our base of supporters and stakeholders. This position is responsible for managing a robust schedule of Food Bank publications — both on- and offline — including mining and writing a steady stream of original stories, articles, email appeals and social media posts … to name a few.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum two full years’ professional experience, post-degree, in marketing/communications, preferably within a nonprofit development department.
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, creative writing, marketing or communications. Bachelor’s degree may be substituted for five (5) years of relevant work experience
  • Exceptional creative writing skills with an emphasis on appeals, articles and/or social media content.
  • Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail. Ability to prioritize, handle multiple assignments, manage/meet tight deadlines, and quickly adapt to meet unexpected and urgent requests a must.
  • Expert knowledge and working experience with an array of digital marketing and social media platforms.
  • Superb verbal communication skills. Ability to be credible with food bank clients, supporters, corporate contacts, board members, and people of diverse background/circumstances.
  • Ability to effectively work independently, and in a team setting.
  • Comfort visiting and interacting at food distribution sites, fundraisers and other food bank events. Ability to demonstrate excellent judgment and discretion with sensitive issues.
  • Valid California driver’s license with insurable driving record. Regular access to reliable transportation (this position regularly travels to and reports on distributions, events, etc.).


Preferred Qualifications

  • Interest/experience in fundraising, as well as advocacy or other upstream approaches to our hunger-relief work. 
  • Photography, videography and film editing experience a plus.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish or English/Asian Language) a plus.
  • Experience with Adobe creative suite (InDesign, Photoshop) and Wordpress. Ability to troubleshoot basic HTML/CSS.
  • Comfortable presenting/speaking in front of audiences.

Physical Requirements

This work is located in an office and a warehouse environment. Regular local travel required to attend/report on food bank programs and to assist with events. The following physical activities are necessary in the performance of this job: Talking, hearing, writing, reasoning, persuading, interpreting and prioritizing. Ability to move throughout the Food Bank building. Ability to use a computer. Good interpersonal communication.  


This is a full-time non-exempt position working a 7.5 hour workday, 37.5 hours per week. The starting hourly wage range for this position is $30.04 -$31.04 per hour ($58,581.90 - $60,534.63 annualized).  We offer an outstanding benefit package including:
