The Education Manager is full-time, year-round, non-exempt position (hourly) and reports to the Executive Director. The Education Manager directs seasonal weekend educational programming and weekend visitor experience, as well as overseeing both onsite and offsite humane education experiences. It is a forward-facing position key to the Sanctuary’s mission.

Key Responsibilities

Manage seasonal weekend visitor education:

-         Supervise/coordinate team of 2 – 4 PT seasonal tour guides and/or current staff (depending on staffing and plans)

-         Supervise 1 PT seasonal kiosk attendant and 1 PT seasonal store cashier

-         Weekend visitor center management

-         Give humane education tours each weekend May-Oct and occasionally other dates and special tour events

-         Assist with community and onsite events as needed

-         Institute surveys onsite and via email to track impact and collect visitor information

-         Data entry as needed (possibly weekly)

-         Provide reporting for grants and advocacy

-         Give 1-1 and some group tours year-round working with Development team on messaging

-         Give digital tours year-round and create custom digital education content

-         Work directly with Communications team to do advocacy work on and offsite and create educational social media content

-         Recruit and train weekend team including volunteers as needed

-         Design tour content and coach tour guides working with Executive and Shelter Directors

-         Research animal ag industry and pedagogical / change psychology trends to keep tour content current, compelling and accurate

-         Coordinate with shelter staff to ensure animal and visitor safety and design best tour routes

-         Coordinate with events staff on weekend programming

-         Coordinate with marketing and development staff to ensure messaging consistency

Oversee and execute advocacy efforts involving offsite and onsite humane education and advocacy efforts; and literature distribution through the remote organization of volunteer street teams

Work with volunteers and interns to meet program goals; could potentially help with volunteer management.

Other duties as needs and opportunities emerge including expanding out the programs department into additional advocacy and program work. Some travel will be required.

Experience and Qualification

-         Experience with nonprofit education or advocacy efforts 

-         At least two years of supervisory experience

-         Customer service or constituent relations experience

-         Demonstrable commitment to organization’s mission and values

-         Previous experience in education or public speaking

-         Comfort around all animals

-         Ability to work with children of all ages

-         Experience working with farmed animals a plus

Skills

-         Demonstrated knowledge of farmed animal advocacy and veganism

-         Strong written and verbal communication skills

-         Ability to improvise in a fast-paced and fluid work environment

-         Ability to work well collaboratively across departments

-         Excellent customer service skills

-         High degree of comfort interacting with farmed animals

-         Ability to travel as needed 


This position involves standing and sitting for hours at a time, interacting with farmed animals, moving around the large Sanctuary property for tours and other purposes, and occasional lifting. It requires working some evenings and most weekends during the season (May– October) with a more flexible and traditional schedule during the rest of the year.
