About Generation Hope:
Founded in 2010, Generation Hope provides mentoring, resources, and services to help teen parents become college graduates and to help their children become kindergarten rock stars. Teen parents are often dismissed by school officials and others when it comes to their potential to pursue higher education. Generation Hope presents college-readiness workshops in the community throughout the year to identify and recruit promising students to our program. Once accepted, Generation Hope provides each Scholar with three supports that we believe increase the likelihood that they will obtain their college degree; up to $2,400 per year in tuition assistance, one-on-one mentoring, and crisis support. Additionally, Scholars receive an increased network of support from the extended family that the program provides to them and to their young children. This support stays with Scholars until they earn their two or four-year degree. To date we have provided more than $500,000 in tuition assistance, supported 170 teen parents in college, and celebrated 51 teen parents earning degrees through our program.
Generation Hope currently serves 101 teen parents attending 18 different colleges and 300 expecting or parenting high school students annually through college-readiness workshops. In July 2018, Generation Hope expanded its services in a pilot program called Next Generation Academy, which provides literacy and social-emotional learning as well as case management to the children of Generation Hope Scholars. This two-generation solution to poverty is focused on increasing the school-readiness levels of our Scholars’ children when they enter kindergarten while simultaneously helping their parents become college graduates.
Generation Hope’s founder is a CNN Hero and was named a 2017 Minority Business Leader by the Washington Business Journal as well as one of the “Top 40 Under 40” by the Washingtonian in April 2017. Additionally, the Catalogue for Philanthropy has named the organization “one of the best” nonprofits in the D.C. region.

Generation Hope is looking for a passionate, self-starter who can formalize our communications efforts -- elevate our brand, tell compelling stories, and position Generation Hope as a premiere two-generation model for reducing poverty. Reporting to the Director of Development, the Communications Manager will set, guide, and implement the strategy for all communication, website, and public relations and collateral to consistently articulate Generation Hope’s mission. The Communications Manager will work closely with Development, Program, and other staff across the organization, and play an integral role in the success of Generation Hope’s year-round development and outreach efforts. As Generation Hope begins to refresh our brand, the Communications Manager will play a lead role in developing content and collateral for the brand, and supporting its roll out. The Communications Manager will write authentic, persuasive, compelling and inspiring content for all external and internal communications, crafting compelling copy for our website, email programs, social channels, blog, and much more. This position is responsible for making sure our communications are both on-brand and effective, bringing Generation Hope’s mission and impact to life through their words. Applicants should be excited about developing and implementing plans to engage target audiences and spread the message about our work. The ideal candidate should have a proven track record of success in the communications sector or related fields, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Responsibilities of the Communications Manager (as they relate to the organization’s goals) include,
but are not limited to:
- Designing and executing a year-round communications effort that articulates the mission, work, and impact of Generation Hope to donors, volunteers, program participants, families, and other external stakeholders
- Generating content and managing communications that engages audience segments and leads to measurable action, including annual and special fundraising campaigns such as direct mail and other solicitations, as well as program needs, thought leadership efforts, and overall key messaging for the organization
- Managing the development, creation, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to, newsletters, appeals, event collateral, brochures, annual reports, pitch decks, and Generation Hope’s website, delivering excellent copy that aligns to our brand voice and inspires the reader
- Assisting with communications needs for special events, such as the annual gala, such as creating talking points for speakers, creating copy for event invitations, sending event emails, etc.
- Monitoring, tracking and analyzing the effectiveness of communication activities and provide data driven strategies and tactics
- Managing Generation Hope’s website, keeping content dynamic, fresh, accurate, and updated
- Managing and distributing the monthly e-newsletter and leading other email campaigns for the organization. Tasks include: writing articles, designing layouts, conducting story interviews, and managing email list.
- Managing and distributing the bi-annual print newsletter. Tasks include: writing articles, designing layouts, conducting story interviews, and working with the Operations Associate to manage the mailing list.
- Strengthening and expanding our social media presence by managing a detailed social media calendar that ensures we are reaching all relevant audiences with strategic messaging across multiple channels and that all staff are engaged in the curation of content
- Working with the media to secure optimal media exposure for the organization, including arranging interviews, confirming logistics, confirming Scholars to be interviewed, following up with reporters, pursuing leads, etc.
- Providing media prep expertise to CEO and creating and executing a plan to position the CEO as a thought leader in the field by participating in high-profile speaking or media opportunities
- Becoming an expert in the Generation Hope voice and tone and continuing to evolve Generation Hope’s brand voice, always representing the organization's values
- Revising our Branding/Writing Style Guide and teaching the Generation Hope voice to the wider Generation Hope team
- Serving as a staff liaison to the Marketing/Communications Committee to advance the strategic goals of the organization as they relate to communications efforts
- Regularly meeting with the Program Team to stay abreast of and assist with program needs, Scholar stories and experiences, and ways to communicate impact to our audiences
- Leading the branding refresh effort to enhance our brand and to reflect the addition of our new children’s programming, Next Generation Academy
- Providing trainings and support to the board of directors on Generation Hope’s key messaging, branding, and other communications needs
- Maintaining professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Passion for the mission and vision of Generation Hope.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- 2 years of communications experience, ideally covering areas such as website content, newsletters, social media, and donor communications
- The ability to take knowledge and transform it into exciting and compelling messages, and disseminate it to the right audiences through the best distribution channels is critical.
- Highly collaborative working style with a sincere commitment to working with all constituent groups, including staff, board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters
- Experience developing and implementing communications strategies
- Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills. Knows how to craft and tell stories.
- A strong track record as someone who thrives on managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently
- Positive energy and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels
- Entrepreneurial and innovative
- Proficient in Google Apps, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Canva. Exceeds proficiency in digital platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, MailChimp, Hootsuite or other social media management tool, and other social and digital applications.
- Preferred but not required: Working knowledge of database management, content management systems, and design and web software, including Photoshop, InDesign.
- Diverse portfolio of copy examples including the web, print, advertising, email, and social media
- Ability to adapt copy tone of voice to align with various audiences
- Incredible attention to detail, caring about the little things and always watching for typos.
- Exceptional interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills -- stellar writer and an even better editor
- Experience writing copy for marketing purposes
- A sense of humor
- Ability to express your opinion confidently and with respect for others
- The ability to participate in evening and weekend events
