Power to Decide, the campaign to prevent unplanned pregnancy, believes that all young people should have the opportunity to pursue the future they want, realize their full possibility, and follow their intentions. The Controller has overall responsibility for the financial management of Power to Decide, from accounts payable and receivables, through monthly financial close and year end audit. The Controller reports to the Chief Operating Officer/Chief Financial Officer.


  • Primarily responsible for the general ledger and financial records including:
  • Ensure grant and contribution revenues, contract/consulting revenues, publication sales, donations, interest, and other revenue and related receivables are properly recorded in accordance with not-for-profit GAAP
  • Review monthly reconciliations of cash, AR, AP, and investment accounts
  • Maintain general ledger accounts/subaccounts in Dynamics SL accounting application to ensure proper reporting and tracking of revenue and expenses
  • Review monthly departmental overheard and fringe cost allocations, net asset releases/adjustments, and other P&L and balance sheet entries, as required
  • Review payroll transactions and journal entries (biweekly), including staff labor allocations, employee expense reporting, and reconciliation of quarterly GL salaries to the 941 federal tax and state tax reports
  • Supervise month end closing process
  • Review invoices and other billing reports for federal subcontracts and all grants
  • Manage the Senior Accountant and Staff Accountant positions
  • Assist Human Resources with benefits management, FSA, pension, etc. Prepare annual Form 5500
  • Create and maintain Excel spreadsheets for various reports and schedules
  • Document and monitor adherence to critical accounting processes as required for annual external audit and maintain accounting policies and procedures handbook
  • Manage the annual audit process with the external auditors, including drafting the financial statements and preparing schedules to support the Form 990
  • Assist with preparation of financial information to be presented to the Finance Committee as well as the full Board of Directors
  • Other duties as assigned

The successful candidate will be/have:

  • Bachelor’s degree and CPA required
  • A minimum of 8 – 10 years of relevant experience as a senior accountant, assistant controller, or controller in a not-for-profit organization
  • Five years of supervisory experience
  • In-depth experience and familiarity with not-for-profit GAAP, particularly revenue recognition and fund accounting
  • Experience with federal awards and subcontract oversight in accordance with the Uniform Guidance
  • High degree of proficiency with leading accounting software and applications, Microsoft SL (Dynamics) general ledger preferred
  • Experience with third-party (Paylocity, Paychex, ADP etc.) payroll processing applications preferred
  • Comfortable working virtually with remote staff, using Skype for Business, SharePoint and OneDrive
  • Must be a good team player; work and interact effectively with departments throughout the organization
  • Experience reporting expenditures under both federal and foundation funding
  • Experience in preparing and consolidating departmental operating budgets
  • Experience in fixed asset accounting and capitalized website costs
  • Strong spreadsheet skills

The Controller is an exempt position.
