As a member of the Action Against Hunger -USA Technical Department, and specific focal point for Nutrition the Senior Technical Advisor will be responsible for developing and implementing evidence-based and innovative nutrition approaches and interventions; and contributing to global nutrition learning. The Senior Technical Advisor for Nutrition will coordinate with the nutrition specialist based in the Horn and East Africa Regional Office (HEARO) and program country offices.

Specifically, the main responsibilities are to provide technical advice and guidance to innovative nutrition programming by:

  • Driving organizational learning, developing core policies, tools and guidance, knowledge transfer and capacity building; and providing technical support in the area of nutrition to the team at the Nairobi-based Horn and East Africa Regional Office (HEARO), as well as the organization as a whole.
  • Supporting the mobilization of critical resources through the design of country, regional and global programming, integrating innovative approaches and applied best practices in the area of nutrition.
  • Engaging strategically to influence nutrition policies and practices of key stakeholders most critical to our organizational objectives and developing key partnerships to achieve programming at scale.
  • Maximizing impact in country programs by supporting core programming and when necessary, providing demand-driven support to field-based program & project implementation and management.


KEY ACTIVITIES IN YOUR ROLE WILL INCLUDE

II. Essential Job Duties

A.     Expand Learning, Evidence base and Knowledge Transfer (30%)

In partnership with the global and regional technical colleagues and the research and learning team, the Senior Technical Advisor for Nutrition will contribute to the development of the Nairobi-based Knowledge & Innovation Hub, a critical strategic initiative to drive organizational learning, innovation, knowledge transfer and capacity building:

•  Oversee the documentation, capitalization, and dissemination of Action Against Hunger USA innovative nutrition programming experiences and lessons learned.

•  Ensure dedicated technical support and leadership are available to specific global or research projects

•  Oversee the secondary analysis of existing or proposed programs to ensure relevance, impact, viability, sustainability, and quality of the action.

•  Build partnerships with other agencies &/or partners to ensure up to date knowledge and understanding of the latest pertinent nutrition programming, tools, technical developments, and innovations especially as relates to simplified approaches.

•  Lead and coordinate the development of guidelines, manuals, position papers and other institutional documents on nutrition topics and collaborate with Action Against Hunger network initiatives, advancing and promoting these guidelines, etc.

•  Facilitate nutrition knowledge management and dissemination, through the development and usage of Action Against Hunger’s resources and trainings platforms.

B.     Resource Mobilization and Program Development (30%)

Mobilize resource from US-based institutional donors and US-based foundations and other strategic donors as necessary. This will be accomplished through a variety of activities:

•  Working in partnership with the business development team, the HEARO team, the future Knowledge & Information Hub, participate and support applications/proposals for strategic grants and contracts for country, regional and global programming.

•  In support of pre-positioning efforts in the U.S. and abroad, contribute to identifying potential partnerships; increasing awareness in Washington DC & New York of our core capacities, signature interventions, simplified approaches. 

•  Build and develop relationships for strategic collaborations and partnerships with key stakeholders, including academic and policy institutions in line with Action Against Hunger USA’s technical strategy.

•  Engage with private fundraising and communication teams to mobilize corporate and private funding to support the mission of the organization.

•  Review and give inputs to concept notes and proposals from country teams to ensure evidence-based sound technical nutrition approaches and interventions are included.

C.       Strategic Influencing & Engagement (20%)

The Nutrition Senior Technical Advisor will collaborate in driving organizational efforts to develop and implement a robust influencing agenda to positively affect the policies and practice of key stakeholders most critical to organizational goal of ending hunger and undernutrition. This support includes:

•  Contributing from a nutrition perspective to AAH -- USA influencing strategy at a global, regional, and country level.

•  Supporting constructive dialogue and collaboration across headquarters teams, with the regional team, country teams, and the entire Action Against Hunger global network related to innovative nutrition approaches and multispectral programming in a manner that positions the organization as a thought leader. (e.g. the Network SNHA Group)

•  Representing Action Against Hunger’s technical experiences and positioning in nutrition within external global alliance, coordination, working groups and technical for a (e.g. Global Nutrition Cluster, Simplified Approaches Working Group, CORE Group Nutrition Working Group etc.)

•  Advance AAH -- USA nutrition expertise recognition by presenting high level content at conferences or learning events (e.g. Research for Nutrition)

•  Advising and contributing to External Relations (ER)/communication efforts, through press releases, interviews, radio/video/print material development and other documentations.

•  Facilitating the dissemination of nutrition information, experiences, and case studies to ER/communications for public communications, website materials etc.

•  Build relationships for strategic collaborations and partnerships with key stakeholders, including academic and policy institutions in line with Action Against Hunger USA’s technical strategy.

D.  Technical Leadership in Maximizing Program Impact- (20%)

The Senior Technical Advisor Nutrition in collaboration with the Nairobi-based colleagues at HEARO, will provide critical support to field based and global teams to implement high-quality and accountable programming with maximum impact in the communities we serve.

Duties will include:

  • Leading the development of nutrition components of technical policies, framework, approaches, and project models.
  • In collaboration with other Technical Advisors and specialists at HEARO, facilitating technical support to nutrition interventions and research projects in Haiti, and other countries as required.
  • In collaboration with other technical advisors and specialists, promoting the implementation of nutrition technical policies, framework, approaches, and project models across AAH -- USA.

DO YOU MEET THE PROFILE REQUIRED CRITERIA?

III.    Physical Demands, Working Conditions, Travel, and Environment

•   The employee has to be fit and able to travel to Action Against Hunger missions for periods of up to 2 weeks. Expected to travel to the field, network, and related meetings (approx. 30%)

Must be available to work and travel outside normal office hours or on the weekends as needed 

IV.     Qualifications & essential experience

• Minimum Post-Graduate degree (Master’s Degree or higher preferred) in Nutrition, Global Health, or a related field.

• A minimum of 8 years of previous work in nutrition-related programs in low- and middle-income countries with an international humanitarian and a development organization.

V.      Requirements

  Experience in a nutrition technical advisory position with an international humanitarian and/or development organization (at the region, or headquarters levels).

•  Extensive experience and knowledge of nutrition technical topics, including: MAMI, concurrent wasting-stunting, ICCM+ nut, integration of nutrition into health systems, etc.

•  Expertise specifically relating to but not restricted to addressing acute malnutrition in children under five years old and pregnant lactating women, in humanitarian contexts

•  Extensive knowledge of the CMAM/IMAM model, including technical innovations such as Simplified Approaches and related global-level protocols and policies

•  Experience working in emergency, and post-crisis, in all the steps of the Project Cycle Management, and of humanitarian coordination mechanisms. 

•  Experience engaging in research, and/or rigorous evaluations in nutrition and linking initiatives (external engagement, donor relations, communications, etc.).

•  Lead on project design and/or technical innovation experience, including the involvement in the development of program guidance and support tools and methodologies.

•  Experience collaborating with major humanitarian donors (e.g. USAID, ECHO, FCDO) and of their reporting  requirements; long-term and developmental donors and foundations is a plus.

•  Ability to manage donor and stakeholder relations within other work requirements

•  Ability to present clear ideas and arguments, providing distance support, training, and influence.

•  Flexible, adaptable, dynamic, and enthusiastic; interest in working with other sectors

•  Proactive and taking initiative, autonomous and reliable. 

•  Fluent in written and spoken English. (Working knowledge of French desirable, but not required)

•  Existing eligibility to work in the US is required.
