Background

The Community Chest of Port Washington is a non-profit organization established in 1949 to raise and distribute funds to charities dedicated to improving the Port Washington community for all residents, exemplifying the spirit of The People of Port Helping the People of Port. It also offers below market rent to charities dedicated to improving the Port Washington community.

The Community Chest is one of the oldest nonprofit organizations in Port Washington. It was established in 1949 to consolidate fundraising activities for a handful of local agencies, including the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and the Village Welfare Society. Its initial fundraising goal was set at $39,870. Today the Community Chest’s fundraising goal is $375,000 and it provides grants of $325,000 (in 2019) to 27 nonprofits. Through these organizations, donations to the Community Chest help to fund social, health, educational and other services for Port Washington residents in-need.

Executive Director Job Responsibilities:

  • Engages with volunteers, board members and community stakeholders to articulate the mission and vision of the Community Chest at all internal and external meetings and public and community-wide events 
  • Proactively identifies and pursues potential donors and potential available grants
  • Partners with the Campaign Committee to create a development plan for the year (including direct mail, email campaign, donor cultivation and events) and pursues strategies to ensure that the Community Chest meets the campaign goal
  • Works with event committees to produce and run five fundraising events: Thanksgiving Day Run, Winter Run, Citizen of the Year, Golf & Tennis Outing and Kayak Run  
  • Works with the Treasurer to develop the annual office budget and ensures that the organization remains within the budget 
  • Works with the Budget & Allocations Committee to distribute and evaluate grant applications and schedule interview sessions; responsible for communication with nonprofits on grant application and reporting process 
  • Works with the Nominating Committee to develop slate of directors; prepares orientation materials
  • Works with the Public Relations committee to write all press releases and social media posts to promote the Community Chest and its fundraising events
  • Creates agendas and supporting materials for all monthly Executive Committee meetings and quarterly Board meetings, including fundraising status reports; provides reports to the Board on a timely basis in advance of meetings  
  • Oversees donation bookkeeping and reporting to the Board and Executive Committee
  • Creates all written and digital marketing pieces and ensures their timely distribution 
  • Drafts organizational and office policies and procedures and provides support to all Board committees as needed
  • Liaison to building tenants on an as needed basis
  • Supervises the work of the office associate and trains when necessary; responsible for writing annual performance evaluation
  • Facilitates Port Washington COVID-19 Community Response Working Group


Qualifications / Skills:

  • Self-starter with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • At ease with all levels of interaction: staff, board, elected officials and donors
  • Strong work ethic with unquestionable personal integrity
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills
  • Active recent fundraising experience including excellent donor relations skills and an understanding of the local funding community
  • Enthusiastic, organized, innovative and flexible with the ability to multitask
  • Proficient in Word, Excel and comfortable with technology in general 
  • Must be able to work beyond working hours as needed

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or Advanced Degree required
  • 5 or more years management or supervisory experience preferred
  • Understanding, experience and skill in working with a Board of Directors
