Job Announcement:

This position is located in Philadelphia, PA, primarily at AAU’s office located in Chinatown North at 1023 Callowhill Street. AAU is seeking a multi-lingual in Mandarin Chinese (additional dialects a plus), passionate, self-motivated individual committed to immigrant rights, leadership development, and community building to join our organization as the AAU Immigrant Rights and Outreach Organizer. This person will coordinate and lead our immigrant rights organizing and base-building work focused primarily in the recent immigrant, Chinese community. 

Major Responsibilities:

AAU’s immigrant rights and workers rights base building work is about ensuring rights and access to resources for our API immigrant and refugee communities, growing leadership, and building API power throughout the city of Philadelphia and Pennsylvania. This position will be responsible for coordinating AAU’s immigrant rights work including detention/deportation support, know-your-rights education and outreach, policy advocacy and campaign participation, and API and immigrant network relationship-building. This position will also be responsible for deepening AAU’s base building work  focused in the recent immigrant Chinese community.

This organizer will:

  • Support Asian community members facing detentions and deportation proceedings in Philadelphia to attain legal assistance, language access, and a clear understanding of their rights and options; Participate in advocacy, policy, and campaign work in local, statewide and national coalitions /networks related to immigrant rights and worker rights;
  • Work with AAU staff and members to develop and carry AAU’s adult base building and leadership development organizing work particularly in the immigrant Chinese community among parents, workers, and others;
  • Work with AAU staff to develop AAU’s worker’s rights advocacy and organizing projects in Chinese and broader Asian immigrant communities;
  • Work with AAU youth programs to support youth to learn about immigrant rights issues and to be involved in AAU’s immigrant rights advocacy and service work;
  • Participate in AAU’s broader community building and advocacy work and issue campaigns (i.e. Mid-Autumn Festival, Anti-Asian violence advocacy, etc.)

Compensation:

Part Time or Full Time. Compensation depends on experience and availability. Full time includes medical and dental benefits and paid time off. 

Job Requirements:

  • Multi-lingual in Mandarin and English essential: confidence and fluency in speaking, proficiency in reading/writing;
  • Strong commitment to social justice issues – especially those facing API communities;
  • Desire to empower the Asian American community;
  • Value justice across all low-income communities and communities of color;
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently, requiring minimal supervision;
  • Strong interest in parents and/or worker organizing; 
  • Ability to work well with other staff and community members; 
  • Skilled at balancing and prioritizing multiple projects;
  • Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends as needed.

Strongly Preferred:

  • Experience in immigrant rights advocacy and organizing;
  • Experience in adult organizing around social justice advocacy base-building agenda;
  • Experience in leadership development skills building; 
  • Experience working with high-school aged youth doing advocacy and learning;
  • Writing skills to support grant and reporting requirements;
  • Access to reliable transportation with ability to move around Philadelphia;
  • Valid driver’s license with the ability to drive (personal vehicle not required);
  • Ability to make a minimum two year commitment to this position.
