The LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired, located in downtown San Francisco, is looking for a full-time Administrative Assistant to step into a unique role in our ever-expanding organization. You'll be working closely with our Executive Assistant as well as partnering with your managers and other colleagues in the Community Services and Access Technology departments on daily tasks. We are a fun, fascinating, and widely diverse community of warm and friendly folks. We work in a beautiful new building in downtown San Francisco, steps from the Civic Center Bart stop, with spectacular views from our top floor offices.

As an Assistant at the LightHouse, a typical day might include the following:

  • Attending a local technology conference with a blind Director to provide descriptive content of the event hall exhibits;
  • Entering various program data into Salesforce;
  • Assisting a blind or low vision colleague to register for a conference or online course; or assisting a team member to draft and send professional emails.
  • Reading aloud technical text to blind colleagues and describing, in detail, any graph, table or pictorial content and performing other administrative functions that help remove any barriers to accessibility;
  • Picking up boxes from the mailroom, opening order supplies, and distributing or shelving contents;
  • Taking meeting minutes for a manager or Executive Director.

You enjoy helping people. It's your passion and it makes you look forward to the day ahead. You get a kick from helping others get to those "aha" moments. You are a collaborative-minded team player.

You pay attention to the details. Nothing falls through on your watch. You are patient and cool under pressure and you own your mistakes.

You can communicate clearly. You write exceptionally well. You can explain just about anything to anyone, and you're comfortable communicating in writing and over the phone. Also, a BA degree is a big plus.

You have great customer service skills. They don't need to be from traditional customer service experience. We just need to clearly see from your cover letter and resume where you developed your awesome skills. Charitable work, internships and volunteer experience all count!

You have interest and curiosity about the aspirations of people with disabilities. Your interest is particularly those who are blind or have low vision, and are willing to learn our history, best practices and diversity of our community.
