JHP, Incorporated is seeking a Residential Counselor to provide services to homeless adults and families at its Naylor Road Family Shelter. Support staff help consumers access resources, obtain stable employment and housing, promote self-sufficiency, and increase life-skills.

The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, work well independently and as part of a team, have strong oral and written communication skills, and experience working intensively in one-to-one relationships with consumers to provide support, advocacy, and access to necessary resources. BILINGUAL PROFESSIONALS (SPANISH/ENGLISH) ARE HIGHLY ENCOURAGED TO APPLY.

Performance Accountabilities

  • Enforce rules and regulations to ensure the smooth and orderly operation of shelter programs
  • Provide emergency first aid and summon medical assistance, when necessary
  • Mediate interpersonal problems between residents
  • Make regular rounds to ensure that residents and areas are safe and secure
  • Observe residents to detect and report unusual behavior
  • Communicate with other staff to assist with finding solutions to problems
  • Collaborate with staff to develop programs to address the needs of the residents

Preparation and Knowledge

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Flexible work schedule ( involves nights, weekends, and holidays)
  • Willing to arrive early and stay late, when necessary
  • Must be able to establish rapport wand build trust with residents in a homeless shelter
  • Must have an ability to handle crisis situations
  • Reliability is a priority
  • Great sense of humor
  • CPR/First Aid Certified
  • TB Clearance and criminal background checks (District and Federal) must be obtained prior to start date
  • Drug testing is mandatory


Salary for Residential Counselor = $14.20 per hour
