Zone 126’s (is a sponsored project of the Fund for the City of NY, Inc.) mission is to ensure every child currently living in public housing has the education and skills needed to graduate from high school prepared for college or the workforce and enters the 21st century equipped with the tools needed to thrive.

Who is Zone 126?

Zone 126 is a community-based organization focused on Western Queens and is at the forefront of a collaborative strategy that supports youth attending local under-resourced schools to ensure that they have the skills and resources needed to succeed in life.

Where is Zone 126 located?

Zone 126 is located in Astoria and Long Island City, Queens. Our organization works with three specific zip codes that are each anchored by a NYCHA (New York City Housing Authority) housing development (11101-Queensbridge Houses, 11102-Astoria Houses, and 11106-Ravenswood Houses). A 2018 New York Times Article stated that “Long Island City, Queens where Queensbridge’s 96 aging buildings are home to a mostly black and Hispanic population with a median household income of $15,843, well below the federal poverty line for a family of four.”

What does Zone 126 do?  

Zone 126 coordinates partnerships with local and national service providers from the time a child is born (cradle) until a young adult graduates from college and enters the workforce (college and career). This is known as our Cradle-to-College-to-Career pipeline. Through our partnerships we are collaboratively offering a myriad of services that include early childhood, literacy, STEM (science technology, engineering, and math), mental health, career exploration, and college counseling amongst other needed support services.

Zone 126 is seeking to hire a Deputy Director who is mission-minded, committed, passionate and able to adapt quickly to the ever changing environment of working with NYC public schools. This individual will be extremely detail oriented, quick thinking and knowledgeable about the city, state and federal Community Schools movement. The Deputy Director will be skilled in partnership development, and contract management (heavy budgeting) as Zone 126 works to support three neighborhood Community Schools that are a part of our Pre-K through 12th grade pipeline of services. Our work is rooted in program coordination within schools and in community, at any one time this individual could be managing up to 20 partnerships that may all be taking place simultaneously.

Position Summary

The Deputy Director will essentially be the right hand to the Executive Director, and will be a strong leader who is skilled at negotiation, and able to supervise staff all while working to support children/families living in public housing. This individual will oversee the Zone 126 Neighborhood Community Schools strategy with Community School Directors and Principals, maintain current partnerships and develop new ones, that support the pipeline. This individual will be a thought partner to the Executive Director, and is willing to make tough leadership decisions to ensure effective implementation of the organizations strategic plan. The Deputy Director must understand as well as be able to use data to pivot and make strategic decisions for the schools that align to the overall organizations goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

1.     Program and Service Coordination

·      will manage three Community School Directors (CSD’s) and support their individual staffers at each of the schools

·      manage the relationships with all three school Principals to ensure that students, families, and the overall school community is receiving the support that is needed

·      outreach to all current partners to ensure that program implementation is happening and figure out if changes need to be made

o   understand all current partner programs in depth and how they align to the cradle to career strategy

·      research new partnerships and begin negotiations to support bringing them to the Zone

o   work with the Data & Evaluation Manager to identify gaps and based upon them seek out the appropriate partnerships

·      work closely with the Data & Evaluation Manager to ensure that all program attendance is being collected on time and if not troubleshoot

·      work closely with each Principal and CSD to identify the areas for growth around chronic absenteeism at each school and develop strategies for improvement

·      will develop quarterly goals per school site, and per staff member to measure staff performance

2. Grants Management

·      will prepare all government grant budgets and submit to Executive Director for review

·      will initiate all budget discussions with school Principals to ensure that budget aligns to the outcomes expected to be achieved by the end of the school year

·      will review budgets on a monthly basis

o   based upon this will review, approve and manage all purchasing as related to the Community Schools

·      will collaboratively work with the Executive Director and the Data & Evaluation Manager to prepare monthly, quarterly and yearly reports for NYC DOE, US DOE and Board of Directors

·      will ensure that all staffers are in contract and compliance with city, state and federal background screening protocols

3. Parent/Family & Community Engagement

·      will spearhead the Zone 126 POP-Up Food Pantry to ensure that our organization is connected to families and learning about their ever evolving needs in order to support continuous improvement

·      work on developing a comprehensive strategy where parent/family & community engagement workshops are delivered in school and in NYCHA housing

·      support the understanding in community of the importance of the cradle to career pipeline

·      and other duties as deemed appropriate and in alignment with the funding requirements


·      Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree strongly preferred

·      3-5 years working experience in the non-profit sector, with some knowledge and understanding of the NYC educational system

·      Experience working with a diverse population of students from age, race, gender, creed 

·      Superior presentation skills (oral and written)

·      Extremely detailed oriented, and meticulous about organization is an absolute must (city, state and federal contracts are very specific and following regulations is key to being successful in this position)

·      Ability to communicate in Spanish (strongly preferred but not a requirement)

Organizational Relationships

·      Reports directly to the Executive Director

·      Close working relationship with Data & Evaluation Manager

·      Supervision of Community School Directors

Work Environment

The Deputy Director

·      will be based at the Elmezzi Foundation offices which are located with Zone 126 at 31-10 23rd St. Ground Floor Astoria, NY 11106

·      will also move from school to school within the neighborhood to meet with partners, staff and Principals

Salary $90,000 (no room for negotiation) with comprehensive benefits package that includes vacation, sick, floating holidays, and 401K plan
