Café Employee/Visitor Services + Membership Associate


CLASSIFICATION

25-28 hrs. per week

Flexible scheduling Tuesday-Sunday and during special events as needed

Non-exempt, $11/hr


ORGANIZATION

The Café Employee/Visitor Services + Membership Associate position is a unique hybrid position at MOCAD.  This person will spend 1-2 days as a Visitor Services Associate greeting customers and informing them about the Museum’s exhibitions and programming, performing daily sales of the MOCAD store and other visitor services duties as assigned. This position will also spend the other days as a Café Employee performing daily sales in Café 78, bartending, maintaining the café space and other café duties as assigned.

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

•                 Strong interpersonal communication skills to interface with various departments and management levels

•                 Interest in contemporary art and culture

•                 Attention to detail and extremely reliable

•                 Proactive and self-starter perspective.

•                 Superior organizational abilities

•                 Working knowledge of Apple OSX, Google Calendar, Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel); familiarity with Shopify and/or Breadcrumb is a plus

•                 Can lift to 25lbs


Visitor Services:

• 1-2 years of retail, customer service and cash handling experience

• Excellent written and oral communication skills


Café:

·  A minimum of 1-2 year of relevant sales, banquet, catering, and/or cafe experience, including customer service, and basic knowledge of accounting procedures.

·  An interest in healthy, well-prepared food and coffee.

·  Basic knowledge of food sanitation requirements.


JOB DUTIES

Visitor Services

  • Answer phone and route voicemail messages
  • Greet Museum guests and inform them about Museum programming, exhibitions and admission
  • Occasionally assist with group tours
  • Open and close the Museum and Store during regular every day and upon special request, which includes turning on/off all exhibitions, as well as lights, turning on/off thermostat, routine clean up of cafe and front desk

·        Respond to visitor inquiries regarding MOCAD’s mission and general museum information, this includes the info@mocadetroit.org

  • Reprint and replace MOCAD front desk promotional materials as needed
  • Enter visitor email sign-ups into Mailchimp
  • Perform administrative tasks as needed


Membership

  • Pitch MOCAD Memberships to all visitors upon entering, while purchasing at the store and/or upon leaving the museum.
  • Process MOCAD Memberships that are purchased, according to Visitor Services Manual.


Store

·        Perform the daily sales of the MOCAD Store (both in store and online) including opening and financial end-of-day closing procedures

·        Maintain the cleanliness and order of the store merchandise including dusting and organizing.

·        Provide great customer service by gaining product knowledge and assisting visitors with product selection.

·        Occasionally gift wrap products which are purchased

·        Have strong visual abilities and assist with merchandising the Store and maintaining design

 

Galleries/Exhibitions (as needed):

  • Maintain a friendly presence while monitoring the galleries.
  • Provides instruction to visitors in the case of emergencies.
  • Routinely inspects gallery spaces and grounds as part of exhibition and building maintenance.
  • Serves as a guide and resource for visitors regarding exhibitions providing information on exhibited works and featured artists

 

Cafe

  • Support the operations of the MOCAD Café which include: set-up, clean-up, making coffee drinks, preparing snack foods, refilling supplies, doing dishes, serving customers and financial end-of-day closing procedures.
  • Serve as bartender and/or café staff for daily operations and special events.
  • Clean up of café area and kitchen, including moving chairs, wiping tables, clearing garbage.
  • Maintains the cleanliness of the cafe to meet or exceed Health Department standards for cleanliness, food handling and sanitation.
  • Monitors stocks of food and beverage items and assists with the preparation of inventory supply orders.
  • Receives delivered food stocks and supplies, verifying receipt of ordered items, as well as stocking and organizing to ensure proper inventory control and organization.
  • Properly maintains and uses all equipment per manufacturer’s and company specifications.
  • Assist in publicity of café.
