ASSOCIATE

Communications Division & International Justice Program

Brussels Office

The Communications Division and International Justice Program (“IJP”) of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) are seeking a highly motivated candidate to provide administrative support to the two teams. The Associate reports to the European Media Director, based in Brussels, and the Associate International Justice Director, based in Washington, DC, and will support other Communications and International Justice staff based in Europe and the United States. This position is based in Brussels and is part-time at 19 hours per week (50% schedule). The schedule for the position is full work days on Tuesdays and mornings from Wednesday to Friday.  


Responsibilities: 


1. Provide administrative support including scheduling, preparing for and taking minutes at meetings, responding to inquiries, recording and processing divisional finances, and making travel arrangements; 

2. Proofread, format, and distribute materials; Assist with coordinating the review, production, and distribution of reports, news releases, letters, charts, briefing papers, op-ends, other publications, and web content;

3. Maintain communication among HRW offices, global staff, and external partners; 

4. Create and maintain extensive contact databases and filing and archiving systems;

5. Assist with promoting content on social media, maintaining webpages, and sourcing multimedia materials;

6. Assist with the preparation of HRW’s “Daily Brief”;

7. Coordinate IJP input to Human Rights Watch’s Universal Periodic Review reports;

8. Monitor proceedings before the International Criminal Court;

9. Assist with the recruitment, onboarding, and mentoring of interns and liaising with universities for partnerships; 

10. Assist with organizing events including press conferences and seminars; 

11. Assist with some research tasks and provide support to associated multimedia projects when necessary; and

12. Carry out other duties as required. 


Qualifications:

Education: A bachelor’s degree in communications, social sciences, international relations, or related studies is required. Coursework in international human rights, international justice, or the European Union is desirable.

Experience: A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:  

1. Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills are required.

2. Creativity, initiative, follow-through, ability to work independently, and excellent organizational skills are required.

3. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and French are required; fluency in other European languages, particularly Italian or Polish, is highly desirable. 

4. The ability to work well under pressure and to manage multiple priorities while working effectively toward deadlines is required. 

5. Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within Human Rights Watch as well as with external partners are required.

6. Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is required. 

7. Proficiency in computer programs including MS Office applications is required.

8. Demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues are highly desirable.
