Position Description

KIND seeks a full-time Paralegal for its Washington, D.C./Falls Church, V.A. field office to support attorneys with case preparation for direct representation clients, legal research, brief and client declaration drafting, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration form preparation, assist with interpretation and translation, assist with outreach and community education events, assist with pro bono placement and related duties, and help manage other administrative duties in the office, including database and file management. This is a full-time role primarily based in Washington, D.C., but requiring work out of the Falls Church, Virginia office, as often as once per week.

Educational Requirements

The Paralegal position requires a Bachelor of Arts degree, and a paralegal certification or training is preferred.

Experience Preferred

  1. Experience working with individual attorneys, law firms, or legal services organizations that provide direct legal service;
  2. Experience working in immigration and/or family law;
  3. Experience working with children, preferably immigrant and refugee children;  
  4. Experience working with survivors of abuse, human trafficking, or other trauma; and 
  5. Experience managing office operations and data management.

Skills Required

  1. Fluency in Spanish;
  2. Excellent organizational skills, time management, and attention to detail;
  3. Strong cultural competency and cross-cultural communication skills;
  4. Ability to work collaboratively with multiple attorneys;
  5. Strong writing and proofreading skills; and
  6. Ability to adapt to fast-changing deadlines and priorities.

Salary Range

Commensurate with education and experience.

Primary Responsibilities

The staff member will have, but not be limited to, the following responsibilities:

  1. Draft, edit, and prepare legal briefs, filings, immigration forms, and client case documents;
  2. Manage client case data and update client management software, including upcoming hearing dates, client communications, and filing deadlines;
  3. Arrange and conduct client meetings for information gathering;
  4. Manage client correspondence;
  5. Provide translation and interpretation between English and Spanish as needed;
  6. Liaise with colleague NGOs to receive case referrals and ensure that referrals comply with KIND's case acceptance criteria;
  7. Liaise with pro bono attorneys and firms as needed;
  8. Participate in KIND’s outreach, Know-Your-Rights presentations, or community education events as needed; and
  9. Assist with office administration as needed.
