Job Description: The Occupational Therapist promotes students’ long-term independence by constructing and implementing therapies consistent with their physical capacity, cognitive abilities, and interests. The Occupational Therapist also enables students to perform tasks needed for access, meaningful participation, and learning in the least restrictive educational environment, while helping students to do the things they need and want to do. The focus of the Occupational Therapist’s work is in the following areas, that if untreated, can result in negative impact on educational performance:

  • Motor skills
  • Cognitive processing
  • Executive functioning
  • Visual perception
  • Self regulation
  • Attention to task
  • Consistent levels of arousal throughout the school day
  • Sensory processing and regulation

This school-based Occupational Therapist reports to the Director of Student Support and has no direct reports. 



Response to Intervention

  • Conduct observations and write corresponding observation reports with recommendations
  • Conduct screenings and write corresponding screening reports with recommendations
  • Design Tier I strategies, interventions, and supports for implementation by the general education teacher in the general education classroom
  • Design Tier II strategies, interventions, and supports for implementation by the therapist in the general education setting
  • Design Tier III strategies, interventions, and supports for implementation by the therapist in resource room settings
  • Conduct pre/post testing at every tier of intervention
  • Participate in Student Support Team Meetings, as requested, to discuss students’ response to intervention and determine next steps
  • Consult with the general education teacher and parents
  • Document all communications with parents


  • Individual Education Plans


  • Conduct observations and write corresponding observation reports with recommendations
  • Conduct screenings and write corresponding screening reports with recommendations
  • Conduct evaluations and write corresponding evaluation reports with recommendations
  • Participate in AED, IEP, Evaluation, and Reevaluation meetings, as requested
  • Develop draft IEPs to include: Present Levels of Functional Performance, Accommodations, Modifications, Recommendations for Assistive Devices and adaptive Technology, Supplementary Aids and Services, and Goals
  • Deliver Occupational Therapy consistent with IEPs
  • Maintain regular service trackers
  • Monitor and report student progress toward IEP goals triennially and during ESY
  • Document all communications with parents  


  • 504 Accommodation Plans


  • Conduct observations and write corresponding observation reports with recommendations
  • Conduct screenings and write corresponding screening reports with recommendations
  • Review medical documentation of disabling conditions requiring reasonable accommodation
  • Develop draft 504 accommodations
  • Participate in 504 meetings, as requested
  • Deliver Occupational Therapy consistent with 504 Accommodation Plans
  • Monitor and report student progress at least annually
  • Document all communications with parents


  • Support school safety by assisting with student arrival and dismissal procedures
  • Participate in school events outside of regular school hours (i.e. Learning Expos, open houses, etc.)
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Provide OT services as needed in Mundo Verde’s summer program (runs through 3rd week in July) for an additional stipend

Expected Outcomes

  • Increase parent engagement and staff expertise through the creation of a parent/professional Occupational Therapy Resource Center and training opportunities
  • Enhance opportunities for optimal student learning by offering classroom ergonomic strategies
  • Increase students’ participation in the general curriculum by designing and teaching adaptive tools and strategies
  • Support children’s social play and participation by adapting play equipment and activities
  • Reduce/eliminate inappropriate referrals to special education

Qualifications of an Ideal Candidate

  • Master’s degree in occupational therapy that is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE)
  • Successful completion of the period of supervised fieldwork experience required by the educational institution where the applicant fulfilled his/her academic requirements
  • Valid license to practice as an Occupational Therapist in the District of Columbia
  • Familiarity with the District of Columbia Municipal Regulations for Occupational Therapy
  • Commitment to adhere to the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) Code of Ethics for the practice of occupational therapy
  • At least 3 years experience working as an Occupational Therapist (school-based preferred)
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish

Other Job Details

  • Employment subject to TB test results, fingerprinting, and background check
  • This can be a full-time (40 hours) or a part-time position (minimum of 30 hours)
