Description

The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is a nonpartisan law and policy institute that seeks to improve systems of democracy and justice in the United States. We work to hold our political institutions and laws accountable to the twin American ideals of democracy and equal justice for all. Brennan Center’s work ranges from voting rights to campaign finance reform, from ending mass incarceration to preserving Constitutional protection in the fight against terrorism. Part think tank, part advocacy group, part cutting edge communications hub, we start with rigorous research. We craft innovative policies. And we fight for them – in Congress and the states, in the courts, and in the court of public opinion. 


Position Summary: 


The Brennan Center is seeking a writer to play a crucial role in an exciting new initiative – an original editorial product that positions the organization at the center of the public conversation on our issues. The writer will produce sharp daily digital content that responds quickly to breaking news developments while also offering analysis in sync with Brennan Center positions. In addition to core writing responsibilities, the writer also will help promote content on social media, will help package and promote the Brennan Center’s expert reports, and otherwise pitch in on its communications work.


Responsibilities: 

  • Write daily content on relevant news developments and Brennan Center work;
  • Basic editing (headlines, decks, copy-editing) of content written by Brennan program staff;
  • Write evergreen web content for revamped website, coming 2019;
  • Work with social media staff to promote original content;
  • Work with Communications team in developing original editorial content strategies to advance Brennan’s work;
  • Help edit Brennan Center reports and other public documents, as needed.

Qualifications: the ideal candidate will have:

  • several years’ experience working as a reporter or writer in a fast-paced news environment;
  • the ability to produce sharp, clear writing on a tight deadline;
  • a strong familiarity with the progressive media and political landscape;
  • a nose for angles on the news that tie in to the Brennan Center’s work or positions;
  • a savviness about social media, especially Twitter; and
  • a passion for our issues and a sense of urgency appropriate to the current moment.
