The Management Center (TMC) is growing! We’re seeking a dynamic presenter who loves thinking and talking about management to join our expanding training team. We have more demand for our training services than we can handle, and a high bar for how we will meet that demand: we need someone who can deliver our existing curriculum to a wide range of audiences and answer questions so effectively that participants are left delighted with their experience and eager for more.
We also need someone who is aligned with our views of management – namely, that at the end of the day great managers do what it takes to deliver and sustain results, and that they do that by blending shared ownership and engagement with rigor and accountability – and someone who brings deep insight and a practical lens on the ways that management intersects with identity, power, and equity.
Who We Are
Our mission is to help social change leaders learn how to build and run more effective organizations so they can deliver great results. Founded in 2006, we have helped shape the practices of hundreds of influential organizations and thousands of individual managers, focusing in particular on leading progressive organizations working for social change. Our clients work on issues – like promoting immigration reform, fighting for racial, economic and gender justice, advocating for educational equity, and protecting voting rights – where they face an inherently uphill battle and so must fight more effectively than their opponents if they are going to win. We aim to help them do that by making their organizations as effective as possible, by providing coaching, training, and publications for the broader field.
Our training program has experienced significant growth in recent years, with demand for our trainings at times outpacing our capacity to meet it (hence the need for new trainers to help us increase the number of trainings we’re able to offer).
We offer trainings in three different general flavors: trainings with a focus on managers in the progressive advocacy sector, trainings for managers in organizations working towards educational equity, and trainings with our Equity and Inclusion Project, bringing a particularly strong focus on managing with a lens of equity and inclusion. We’re hiring trainers for all three of our teams!
What You'll Do
You'll help expand our reach and impact by:
- Delivering our existing training program to diverse groups of managers around the country, primarily via two-day trainings that we offer both publicly and for client organizations;
- Helping meet the increasing demand for trainings for groups led by and for people of color and indigenous people
- Engaging with potential clients who approach us to design training packages that meet their needs, and occasionally reaching out to possible new training partners
- Giving input on the revision our curriculum and design of other products as we grow.
Our training curriculum focuses on the elements of effective management, including delegating effectively, setting goals and measuring progress against them, hiring a talented and diverse team, giving feedback and developing staff members, addressing performance problems, managing using a lens of equity and inclusion, and overall ensuring your team gets great results. Our trainings are interactive, fast-paced, and – ideally – engaging and funny, not dry and stiff.
The primary gauge of your success will be the extent to which you generate the 3 R’s: Raves; Requests (for more work); and Referrals (to others).
Who You Are
The ideal candidate will bring:
- Experience managing a high-performing team or organization, including engaging with senior leaders
- Demonstrated ability to engage at a high level with issues of racial equity and inclusion
- An ability to present material in an engaging and energetic manner to a range of external audiences while seeming like a real person
- The smarts to think on your feet and give good answers to participant questions
We are looking for two trainers: one to work primarily with progressive social change organizations, and one to focus on organizations working for educational equity. For the trainer working with organizations in the educational equity sector, we are looking for candidates with deep knowledge of or experience in the education field and an understanding of how education organizations operate. For the trainer working with organizations in the progressive sector, prior experience in the nonprofit or progressive political arena is a plus, but not required.
Prior experience as a trainer is definitely not a requirement, but you’ll need to be able to present material engagingly and interact well with an audience. We’re also seeking a great manager who knows first-hand what it takes to get things done (with and through a team) and who can convey that knowledge to others. Because of clients and their teams come from a wide range of backgrounds, candidates also need to be able to thoughtfully navigate issues related to race, identity, and equity, and bring a deep commitment to advancing the values of equity and inclusion. What Else You Should Know
The position can be based anywhere in the U.S. and involves substantial travel — about 7-9 nights on the road per month for full-time trainers. Trainers living in the Washington, D.C. area would travel slightly less — perhaps 4-5 nights on the road per month.
We offer a flexible schedule, including the ability to work either full-time or part-time (60% time or more).
Our training roles comes in two varieties – a more junior position (Vice President) and a more senior position (Partner), with the difference between the two being the executive experience you bring and the type of clients with whom you will work.
The full-time salary range for VP roles is between $90,000 to $126,000, and between $120,000 to $160,000 for Partners, with exact salary depending on experience and new staff rarely starting at the top of the range.
We also offer excellent benefits, including an additional 5% employer contribution to your retirement fund with no match required.
