Blue Mountain Center, a nonprofit progressive Artists’ Retreat and Conference Center in the Central Adirondack Mountains of New York State, is now accepting applications for the position of Head Chef for the 2018 season (April 15 - Thanksgiving, 2018). BMC seeks an experienced Head Chef to work in our spacious, attractive kitchen to provide meals for groups of guests participating in our residential programs for writers, artists and activists.

The Head Chef will be given creative freedom to design menu and meals, and will be encouraged to bring their own culinary style and interests to the position. Traditionally the food at BMC has been simple, hearty, collaborative and mostly vegetarian.

The Head Chef position consists of three primary areas of responsibility: Cooking, Ordering, and Kitchen Management. The BMC kitchen is an open shared space with residential co-workers and guests - requiring flexibility and good communication. Additionally, an active interest in art and social issues will make working at BMC a very rewarding opportunity. Interest in gardening and working with local farms is also a plus.

A little bit about BMC:

BMC hosts accomplished activists, writers, visual artists, filmmakers and composers for four-week residencies, providing them with an opportunity to focus on their work, free from the distractions and obligations of day-to-day life. In addition we also host a series of conferences (up to 22 people) during the spring and fall months each year, serving as a resource for culturally-based progressive movement building. These gatherings bring together individuals to talk about pressing social problems such as civil liberties, environmental health and safety, peace, and economic justice. BMC is located within Eagle Nest, a turn-of-the-century Adirondack great camp consisting of several lakes and 1,600 pristine acres of forest.

Head Chef responsibilities include: experience and a willingness to provide healthy, delicious dinners (including some meat) for up to 30 people, completing food orders, managing the kitchen, light baking, and prepping for lunches as needed. Dinners at BMC are served family style - with one large meal prepared and served nightly by the chef with help from their assistant who sets the table, washes dishes, makes salads and does other light food prep.


1). Provide dinner during residencies and conferences.

2). Menu planning for a creative, wholesome, largely vegetarian cuisine.

3). Baking homemade bread, cookies, desserts and granola.

4). Preparing soups, deli salads, and other lunch items as needed.

5). Flexibility to accommodate guest dietary needs as much as possible.


  1. Work with up to 5 primary suppliers from our remote location to supply BMC with a cost effective quantity of healthy, organic and whole foods
  2. Maintain a food budget.
  3. Monitor food usage and anticipate needs for entire kitchen.
  4. Meeting food deliveries, unpacking and stocking shelves.
  5. Coordinating with gardeners to optimize use of food from BMC organic garden.
  6. Driving to supermarkets and organic farms when necessary.

Kitchen Management:

1). Maintain BMC kitchen as a welcoming, safe, clean and efficient work space.

2). Coordinate with other cooks to provide them with the tools and supplies they need.

3). Coordinate with office staff to assure appropriate menus and quantities.

4). Navigate the complexities of having an "open kitchen".

5). Comply with health department regulations, communicate with inspectors.

6). Ultimately responsibility for kitchen cleanliness.

7). Provide back-up meals, intersession provisions.
